Hi I know this is a budgie blog but i want to ask a question about my cockatiel, his previous owners clipped his wings and they've all fallen out by now but ever since I've got him his new growing flight feathers keep falling out most times itill happen randomly and it hurts him cause they get like stuck then fall out, there's been really small ones and some with blood and I don't know why, I just want his feathers to grow back normal so he can fly again do you know what this could be? Thanks
Hello! If the small feathers look like this:
That is a normal growing flight feather. When feathers are growing in, they are supplied nutrients by blood, and appear as a dark shaft filled with blood. While growing, blood feathers or pin feathers are innervated, which means they’re also connected to a nerve. This means that the feathers can feel sore or uncomfortable. Your cockatiel might be picking at them because his sore feathers bother him, and then breaks them, which makes them bleed. It’s important to stop the bleeding as fast as you can. Styptic powder, like Kwik-Stop, can be used on the feather (never on broken skin!), or you can use corn starch to stop the bleeding.
However, if his feathers are getting well and truly stuck while growing, that’s a real problem that you’ll need to see a vet for. It could indicate a problem with his follicles, or his nutrition, or a skin issue. It’s well worth the cost of a vet visit and diagnostics to make him more comfortable and hopefully fix the issue for the rest of his life :)
