Are you open to duplicates? Why / why not?
I’m not super sure what you mean by duplicates. If you’re talking about face claim duplicates yeah I’m down. First off because I have an alternate fc for Beck if we need it, and second if you want to rp with any of my characters as the same fc and hammer out a plot based around it then I think that could be interesting.
I haven’t had a canon blog in a long time. My last one was Loki, and I shied away from duplicates but didn’t outright turn them down on principle. I will not be ok with like, alternate duplicates of my own OCs like Beck. The world couldn’t handle two Becks.
How do you feel about personal blogs following your rp blog?
I don’t care. Like at all. The only thing that annoys me, and this is just because of some of the shit I’ve heard about association, is spam/porn blogs. Now I generally only follow personals back if they are the main blog for an rp sideblog. I currently think I follow one.
What advice would you give to someone new to rp?
My favorite part of this question is by asking for my advice it is heavily implied I’m not a piece of flaming garbage. And I totally am.
I think my best “advice” would be to be confident and put your ideas about your character first. Whether you play an oc or canon, everyone has an idea of what you should write, what you “can’t” write, and what your character is. But you will stop writing if you’re trying to write a character in a way you disagree with to make other people happy.
I write Beck. I made her. I can change her if I want. No ones opinions of how they think Beck might respond to a situation override mine. Sometimes people make assumptions because they aren’t paying attention, sometimes they’re doing it as a joke, or sometimes they just don’t understand your character. At the end of the day you’re going to be a lot happier if you learn to go to someone and say “hey I think maybe we aren’t communicating well” or “this isn’t in character for this muse.”
You get to make the same choice if you’re a canon blog. Your interpretation of a character isn’t wrong. It’s your opinion. You can change aspects of them, you can change canon events. That’s all part of making them your own, and making them your own is unavoidable when writing fanfiction or role playing. That’s why Anne Rice gets her dusty lace victorian panties in a wad when people write her characters. But it’s ok. If you sit around and wring your hands over “am I canon enough” you’re going to go insane. I’ve known a lot of role players that have this issue, and it keeps them from being able to write at all.
Write who you want. Write them how you want. People don’t have to agree with you, and they don’t have to rp with you, but in the long run you’ll be a million times happier if you put your own ideas first and don’t let other people treat you like a doormat.
