A Moment of Being Awake -- By Alyssa
I recently went on a hike with some friends in the Kentucky wilderness. During a time of relaxed exploration I climbed up behind a massive waterfall; I was so motivated to be behind it, in the cleft of the rock, that it was not until I reached the wet cliff behind the massive deluge I had noticed my speed separated me from the others by several yards. At first the majority of the water in the mainstream crashing down on the rocks was so intense and loud that it was difficult to comprehend much else. Being so near the crushing weight of the mighty waters pounding incessantly upon the rocks below me, with its spray misting my entire body was almost overwhelming. After a short while of watching the white waterfall and feeling quite secure in my footing my eyes caught this sight (the picture above).
A childlike train of thought crossed my mind at first. “aw, God is making Himself a little Mancala board.” Then the visual evoked other thoughts: “these little round pools of water weren’t formed by the intensity of mighty waters but by single drops of water consistently falling in the same place.” How like God to reveal His goodness and wisdom in nature. How like God to offer His presence to an individual, to cause her to come awake to it, if even for a brief moment. For the millionth time in my short life I was privileged to witness creation speaking of God’s nature (Rom. 1:20).
Excuse the pun, but in a shallow understanding of nature, water is the weaker element in comparison to solid rock. A single drop of water, or even a few thousand, would not make a difference on stone. And yet, over time, water proves itself to be an equal match to stone because of its consistency. These pools of water were formed by the intensity of repetition instead of power, by the fierceness of consistency instead of a concerted one-time effort.
So it is with Contemplative Prayer (CP). When becoming distracted during CP, one must simply return attention again and again to the presence of God. In the repetition of returning at each distractions beckoning, one discovers the task of returning to become progressively more natural. Through the resolution of consistency a habit is formed. As I am always faced with my human weakness and distracted nature when entering into CP, I will give myself to this process. As the small water droplets give themselves to the process to form the greater goal of a habit, so will I.
This is wisdom toward true change. How like Him to level the playing field of the kingdom, to make greatness available to all, to remove any notion of giftedness equaling greatness in His kingdom.
