Manifesto Project

For my project a created a poem to present my manifesto. My poem is a series of 10 haikus. Haikus are small poems made up of three lines. In the first and third line their are 5 syllables and in the 2nd line, there are 7 syllables. This presentation was important to me because a haiku forces you to choose words that are significant and have important meaning. I wanted my manifesto to be to the point an direct because that is how I see my responsibility as a creative. I included a small floral design to present the work because I think flowers are very symbolic of growth and that is how I see my creative journey.

Why do I create?

Art is for everyone

We are all created by a creative God, the best artist of all

God has gifted me with talents in specific areas and I will honor him by using honing those skills

I create because it’s fun and a way to relieve stress

Who am I as a creative?

I am a servant of the King of the World

I can serve him through my art

I am an artist with a purpose.

I am a producer who likes to make things happen

How will I sustain my creative practice?

I will make myself a quiet, relaxed area where my creativity flows best

I will believe in myself because I am an artist

I will work outside if I can to draw inspiration from things around me

I will give myself sufficient time to make my art and understand that it takes patience

I will tell myself that perfection isn’t always going to happen

I will not allow discouraging voices from my past affect my desire to create

What type of work will I bring into the world?

I will make art thinking of others first and myself second

Creative Manifesto

I struggled greatly coming up with an idea for what I wanted to do for my creative manifesto. Honestly, I didn’t really understand what I was supposed to be doing because I felt like I couldn’t have one since I don’t really consider myself to be an “artist.” However, one of the biggest concepts I have taken away from this semester and this course is everyone is an artist. We are all creative in some way, shape, or form. I have always been creative in terms of music, and eventually also developed a love of putting together videos and slideshows. This is how I came to realize what I should create for my creative manifesto. I have put together a video of pictures of all the people who encourage me and prompt me to do what I do. Also included, are images of why I have chosen the career path I have and how that also influences my creativity and why I create. The music playing in the background is an arrangement of Away in the Manger that I created for my Grandma. One of her favorite Christmas songs was Away in the Manger and on her very last Christmas here on earth, I wrote this arrangement and then played it for her. Fortunately, when I played it for her, I also recorded it. This recording, though far from perfect, is especially special because it was my last Christmas with and one of the last times I played for my Grandma.

Why: I create music because music brings people together, expresses emotion when it otherwise feels impossible, and shares stories. Music is so powerful that it can unite, divide, encourage, or bring down. My goal is to encourage, bring together, and help others realize they are not alone. Experiencing hard and down times is not out of the ordinary and is okay. You may feel like the difficulties will never cease or that you won’t be able to come out successfully on the other side, but this is a lie Satan only wants us to believe. One of the most powerful tools Satan has is music. Lucifer aka Satan was the Chief Musician in Heaven until he was kicked out. He knows God intimately and he knows exactly how to use music to influence or communicate with others to turn or divert them away from God. I want to be a part of the positive influence that music has on people and bring them further away from where Satan wants them and closer to God and His kingdom. I have made the decision to study Psychology and work in law enforcement as a police officer and have a private practice as a therapist to specialize in working first responder families and kids who have endured abuse. Music is a great therapeutic tool and I hope to use it for others and myself. Just as it’s important to care for others, so it is to care for ourselves.

Who: My hope or goal is to utilize music as a way to encourage and minister to those who have suffered through emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. I also hope to reach or impact first responders and their families and families of those in ministry. Along with other people, I also plan on continuing to create for myself. Music is a great outlet and allows myself to release what I am feeling or finding ways to communicate and/or understand what I am struggling to communicate with just words.  

How: I plan on continuing to practice and put forth much effort in stretching myself to continue learning and growing. I also desire to incorporate music therapy into my therapy practice and sessions with clients. They will have the opportunity to listen to and/or create music. Sometimes when we listen to music, we will find a song that pinpoints exactly what we have been trying to put into words or understand. They will have the opportunity to do just that if possible.

What: I want to bring healing to individuals, their loved ones, and even myself. I want to give people an awareness of other potential avenues to therapy and ways to learn more about themselves and how to work through the ups and downs of life.

When deciding on how to go about my creative manifesto I didn’t quite know what to do or how to best approach it. So I looked up examples online and found that it was basically your creative guidelines for you when you further your career. Even though I’m not going into an art specific career and its not the most creative career path I figured I can still make this manifesto apply to what I want to do. I want to be a therapist for kids who have experienced trauma or be a therapist within the SVU. So when looking at the guidelines I have set for myself this is what I came up with. I used one word for each unit because I feel like personally I need that boldness and that one word to remember why. 

Why: For the why portion I put the word HELP in front of bunch of cases about child abuse that went to court. I want to help others and help prevent people from feeling the way I did as a kid, powerless. Theres a stigma about people who become therapists, normally its people who are so broken themselves and feel they can’t be fixed, so they want to help fix other people. Answering the why made me realize why I want to be a therapist and the goals I want to set for myself.

Who: I put the word OTHERS, because growing up I always put others needs before my own. Though sometimes its not always the best thing to do I still did it and it helped show people that at least some people care. Also as a therapist you have no place to judge someone so allow them to feel heard. I want to help others and help them heal in the best way possible

How: I put the word DETERMINATION in a torn and crumbled piece of paper. I just wanted to show how I expect to fail multiple times and go through hardships. The journey to what I want to do is going to be difficult both mentally and physically. There will be days where I will mess up and second guess my choices, but no matter what I need to push through and never give up on what I want for my life.

What: On the last part I put the word GUIDANCE. I sat with this word and really asked myself what do I want to do? What’s the point? I want to provide people with the guidance to heal but also get guidance myself to heal the best possible way I can.

Creative Manifesto

Worry is a strange thing. You can find yourself worried about something that isn’t even a thing yet. Just the possibility and idea of it scares you. This was me when I found out my brother and his wife were going to have a baby. They were not married that long and are pretty young and I know that they are still figuring out their life. My family was hoping they would wait to have life more settled before starting a family of their own. But God has His own timing that is beautiful in its own way. My parents became stressed through this news and that put a toll on all of us as they live in a different state and it is hard to be there for them in this situation or if they need help. But then she came to visit and I got to come home to this beautiful and happy baby that loves life and gives off so much love I know everything will be alright. We are so thankful we are blessed to have such a joyful soul join our crazy family.

This is my creative manifesto because I wanted to tell a story through these photos that I took of my niece. A photo can tell a person a lot of things from the person in it, the mood and setting of the photo, and the place that it is in. At first glance, you see a happy babysitting in a park, but there is so much more to it. The amount of pain and sadness that was brought on before this wonderful joy can be told in a story around it. I wanted to be creative through this art and the past year of my life and looking at these photos. I wish I could have seen these photos when I found out the news a year ago and the peace that they bring me. The interesting thing is they probably have no meaning to other people, but these show me that Ruth will be okay and puts a smile on my face and peace in my soul. This is what I think art should do, and that makes a person feel emotions and see a story as everyone has one. My point of view is that there is so much more behind the art and that can not only come through photography, but also songs, poems, painting, sculptures, storytelling, movies, dancing, running, and so much more. This creative Christian class has shown me how to look further into myself to create such stories and art.

This art also ties into my faith and spiritual side. I had to pray and trust in the Lord when that worry hit my family and I. But looking a year later into the situation I see a beautiful baby girl that is so happy and easy to love. I can trust God more because of this and see my faith laid out in these photos. God also expresses his beauty through Ruth and His creative side in every one of her personality traits and image. There is a plan that God has for everything and we will never know His intentions but they are always for the good and these photos make me feel that way. If I was seeing this art for the first time it would bring me joy, but also understanding in how can anything bad in the world not be made better by seeing the true happiness here.
