The game of credit
I learned from very early on -- and not from my parents -- to treat credit like a game. And the simple question at the heart of that game is: How do I maximize my return? As long as the annual fees are low the APR is within reason, the dominant factor behind whether I hold onto or close out a credit card are the rewards I earn. I'm not a miles grinder or anything like that, but if a card gets me points that I can use on an online retailer, or if there's no fee for using it overseas, then it's a tool in the toolbox for maximizing return.
My wife and I have maybe 3 credit cards between us, and each serves a purpose. One's for airline miles, one's for dining out and travel expenses, and the third is for online shopping at a retailer that we like. This is money we're going to be spending anyway, so the strategy is to make sure we're getting the most back that we can. A big part of that strategy is discipline: We don't over-spend, and we always pay off our statement balances in full. So far I think we've been pretty successful. I feel like I get value back from my cards, we're never in unmanageable debt, and we have an excellent credit score.
