A new Ice, Ice, Baby unit is online and ready for use! Our new “Polar Survival” lessons are focused on the people involved in preparation for field work in the Polar Regions. Lessons show why explorers must develop awareness and solutions for hazards, such as crevasses and frigid temperatures, as well as clothing and food choices necessary for survival. The lessons associated with these topics are designed to be inquiry-based, hands-on, and to meet the NGSS standards for school districts. CReSIS Education GRA presents for the second time at conference in Chicago

Congratulations to Kuang Chen-Hsu, CReSIS Education GRA who presented his poster at the 2015 AERA Conference. This is the second time Chen-Hsu was invited to present. 

His work focused on online interaction animation to foster students' motivation to learn glacier science. His hypothesis is: “The fundamental hypothesis underlying this research is that an integrative model of digital media and classroom lecture is more likely to enhance the quality of glacier science learning.”

"Ice sheets are slowly thawing as water eats away at their core, eroding them where they graze the oceans. Slowly thawing ice is pouring water into the sea, at 130 billions tons of ice per year for the past decade, NASA satellite calculations reveal. This is enough to fill more than 1.3 million Olympic swimming pools, and the rate of thawing is only accelerating.

Ice melt in the region could push sea levels up 10 feet in the worst-case scenario, causing recurving of heavily populated coastlines worldwide in a century or two.

For a dozen days in January, in the middle of the chilly Antarctic summer, The Associated Press followed scientists from different fields searching for alien-like creatures, hints of pollution trapped in ancient ice, leftovers from the Big Bang, biological quirks that potentially could lead to better medical treatments, and perhaps most of all, signs of unstoppable melting."

KU CReSIS Students are welcomed to enter a photo that captures the essence of the Center for Remote Sensing of Ice Sheets. 

Be creative and show what CReSIS is to you through your lens. It could be anything from a day in the life of an engineer or your current project. 

Submissions will be accepted through March 31st. CReSIS faculty and staff will judge photo entries and all photos will be shared on social media. There will be one grand prize winner.

New ice core shows detailed record of CO2 pulses, providing strong insight to last ice age

"A new core from West Antarctica, drilled to a depth of 3,405 meters in 2011 and spanning the last 68,000 years, has “extraordinary detail,” said Oregon State paleoclimatologist Edward Brook, a co-author on the Nature study and an internationally recognized ice core expert.

The finding is important because it casts new light on the mechanisms that take the Earth in and out of ice age regimes.

“It is a remarkable ice core and it clearly shows distinct pulses of carbon dioxide increase that can be very reliably dated,” Brook said. “These are some of the fastest natural changes in CO2 we have observed, and were probably big enough on their own to impact the Earth’s climate."

New research confirms drastic weather in coming years caused by Arctic ice melting

"The new research, published in Nature Geoscience, shows that the increased risk of icy winters will persist for the next few decades. But beyond that continued global warming overwhelms the colder winter weather. The Arctic is expected to be ice-free in late summer by the 2030s, halting the changes to wind patterns, while climate change will continue to increase average temperatures."

Changes in the mass of large ice sheets can also cause small local variations in gravity.

"By combining GOCE’s high-resolution measurements with information from Grace, scientists can now look at changes in ice mass in small glacial systems – offering even greater insight into the dynamics of Antarctica’s different basins. 

They have found that the loss of ice from West Antarctica between 2009 and 2012 caused a dip in the gravity field over the region."
