Moon 14, part 4

Tw: animal injury, mentioned death

Vortexcurl woke up in the medicine den, sticks and leaves tied to his back. Skuashriek looked concerned. Deeply concerned. Crevasserise was praying.

“Are you feeling ok?” Skuashriek asked.

“Oh yeah, I’m totally alright! How about I just stand up and walk out of the- OH WAIT! I CAN’T!”

Skuashriek just huffed and walked away from Vortexcurl. Swashbuckler looked at her, then to Vortexcurl.

“You know, you remind me of myself when I was a kit. Always gettin’ into trouble, even if I had no reason to. I was just like that. I asked for forgiveness, not permission.”

“Ok, old stuff, maybe stop talking so your jaw can-“

“Hey now, young’un! That’s no way to treat an elder! We got in a lot of trouble when we tried to play with an old lady when we were kits! She’s uh… she’s long gone by now… she was approachin’ 90 years old.”

“90 YEARS? Ok, I call bull-“

“She was a human, Vortex. Humans live longer. Did’ja think I was talkin’ about a cat?”

“…Yes?”

“Well, I wasn’t. We called her Nannie because that’s what the human kits called her. We all enjoyed her company… and I was distraught when she had to go.”

”…Oh.”

Swashbuckler’s face fell. “And she was a lucky one. Our family was poor, so when my jaw broke, they couldn’t quite afford to put me down.”

“Put you down? What does that… mean?”

“They told the kits that cats and other animals put down go to a happy little farm where they can play and have lots of fun… doing everything they like. But now, since I’m older, I know “putting down” is just a fancy way to say “mercy kill.” They didn’t think I would live anyway.”

“Live your life to the fullest, kid. I lived mine, and I’m happy with it… but you’re still young.”

Vortexcurl was sarcastic to Skuashriek at an inappropriate time.

Moon 14, part 1

Trying out a first-person pov for this one!

Oh. Hi. I… I thought I was alone. But I guess not. Whatever. My name’s Stingerpaw, and I only needed one friend. She looks and acts a little strange, but no one has questioned her. So I haven’t.

She told me about… Lightclan. But that doesn’t sound right. There were only 3 leaders on the tree during the gatherings. Never a fourth. So that’s why I’m here, traveling on the beach, avoiding the sharp stones until my paws hit the grass.

I’m starting to wonder if my friend was a little mouse-brained. I don’t see a camp here. Just grass, flowers, and the occasional tree or bush or den spanning across thousands of tail-lengths. Maybe I should…

“I’m telling you, I sensed it! This could be our shot!”

Sensed..? That molly really can’t say “smelled” like a normal cat? I decided to hide in a bush to have a better look.

There were two cats. A ginger and what I think Bulbclan calls a “tuxedo,” wherever that term came from. And why are there herbs around her paws? She’s… not even sniffing. How is she-

“Crevasserise, get over here! I swear I’m not going crazy again!”

She’s getting way too close for my comfort, but if I move, I’ll blow it! Why did my friend lead me here? Can I even call her that now?

The strange cat poked her head into the bushes, and me, really not liking being around more than one cat at a time, swiped at her. Unfortunately, her groans of pain alerted the other cat, who approached as well.

“Back. Off.” I managed to muster. Stars, my threat almost sounded like I was choking on a prey bone and trying to keep it silent! At least, I think that’s what it sounded like.

The “tuxedo” just smiled despite her minor bleeding. “Hey, do you know where your Clan is? This is Lightclan territory.”

Stars, I wanted to claw her so bad, I’ll make her into my own bedding! But… that voice of hers. I relaxed without even realizing that I was relaxing. What kind of…

“Sorry. A stupid friend decided to lead me here. Why did she even-“

“What does your friend look like?”

“Oh, she’s fluffy. Her pelt’s kinda like water. You know how you can see through water but kind of not at the same time?”

The “tuxedo” turned to the other cat and whispered something in his ear. What, am I going to be chastised for doing this? Probably. I’m still an apprentice, stars damn it! The other cat nodded and then spoke to me.

“Hey… how much do you like Bulbclan?”

“Not at all. I could do a better job leading than DIRTSTAR! But I don’t really see how you’d be much bet-“

The “tuxedo” undid the herbs on one of her paws, and mist came spilling out of the cracks between her pads. I should have ran… I was taught to run or fight or do anything… but… I was mesmerized. I must have agreed to go with these strange cats, because… the next thing I knew: I had a new home.

Apparently I’m the only apprentice in this Clan, and my mentor’s the deputy. I guess it could be worse. Even though I don’t understand what’s going on.

Stingerpaw has joined the Clan.

Magic is returning…

Skuashriek has enough energy for the day again.

Moon 13, part 1

Tw: labor, birth, blood, and animal death. What a way to start a moon!

Owlweb decided to mark the borders today. It was a pretty boring task, but some cat had to do it, and some other cats liked him. He wasn’t thinking much, but then he heard a scream on Mooclan territory.

He ran over to the source of noise and saw a white she-cat laying close to the border. She was clearly in a lot of pain, and when he saw her back end starting to bleed, he realized something bad.

She was pregnant, and there was no one to help her kit.

“P-please… help me… get a medicine cat! It hurts too much!”

“Ok! Got it! You stay right here and I’ll get Crevasserise!” Owlweb ran off without a second thought. He knew Crevasserise was on patrol with Clementine to gather herbs, and he needed to find them.

It felt like it was only a second of searching, but he caught a glimpse of them. He yowled for them, and the cats ran over.

“What in the name of Starclan is going on here?” Crevasserise asked.

“Mooclan queen! She has no one to help her! She’s in labor!”

“Holy shit…” Clementine said. Owlweb ran over to where the queen was, and Crevasserise and Clementine followed him. Crevasserise was a little skeptical, but when he saw what was going on, he immediately jumped into action.

“Come on! Push! Push! You can do it!”

Owlweb closed his eyes and put his paws over them. He can’t watch… it only reminds him of what he had lost.

“There’s a tom! A healthy tom! Now keep pushing!”

Crevasserise was desperate too, seeing how much this poor cat was bleeding. Clementine, for a lack of a better word… was very, very disturbed. Why did he get roped into this?

The cat had two kits: Both brown toms. Although the cat was weak from blood loss, she still looked at her kits in awe. “Can I… c-c-can I name them?”

“Of course.”

“Um… Grousekit… and… C…Comet…kit… Oh, my sweet babies… I wish… we could get to know… each other…”

The queen curled around her kits, and Crevasserise realized that he should have brought cobwebs once she fell limp.

But what could he have done more than ensure that the kits live?

An herb-gathering patrol helps a queen in labor… Frozendancer’s ghost is wandering.

Moon 12, part 5

Tw: possible derealization and animal death (non-cat)

When Skuashriek woke up, she realized that she wasn’t in the Mooncave anymore. She was in a lush grove, with tons of plants, and still, the sun hit her pelt just right. She still felt a little down and worn-out, but it felt like she could fall asleep here, even though she was already doing that in the real world.

In the corner of her eye, she saw a chrysalis hatching into a small butterfly. Some flowers bloomed when it appeared, and a few more butterflies came from nowhere as the sound of birdsong echoed in the distance.

Skuashriek stood up to explore this place a little more, and saw a wilted plant with a large chrysalis hanging from one of its leaves. It was almost touching the ground, and Skuashriek decided to lift it up a little more.

When she lifted up the plant, the chrysalis began to split open, and a dark, oil-like substance began to spill out. There was more of it than the chrysalis could realistically contain, and Skuahsriek noticed that the sun had set, the birds were gone, the flowers were wilting, and the butterflies were falling to the floor, dying.

And for some reason, the substance avoided her.

Skuashriek finally woke up, too shocked to speak. She looked around herself, and noticed that most of the medicine cats were still there, except for… Freckleear, for some reason, and even Copperrun seemed concerned.

“Holy Starclan, what happened? You were mumbling something about… how everything was dead…”

“Where… where…”

Flamefur put their paw on Skuashriek’s back. “The Salt Conspiracy had to deal with private matters, and… if you don’t feel comfortable sharing what you saw right now, you can go back to camp. We won’t judge.”

Crevasserise pulled up Skuashriek and started to lead her out of the Mooncave. “Thanks, Flamefur. She’s been through a lot.”

Moon 12, part 4

Crevasserise knew that the half-moon meetings can’t wait much longer. He’s a medicine cat. Skuashriek’s a medicine cat. They have to speak with Starclan eventually. But with Skuashriek’s misty paws, she’ll be outed as a Guide very quickly… so he hatched a plan.

In the medicine den, he bound up the younger cat’s paws with dock leaves, tightening them with bindweed so they won’t slip out of place. He only asked her one thing:

“Pretend your paws are hurt.”

And with that, they were off to the Mooncave, where Starclan usually reaches to those that believe that they’re there. Once they made it, they were met with shining crystals, a river clear as ice… and… some unwelcoming company. Before Crevasserise could get a word in, Copperrun, Bulbclan’s medicine cat, spoke up,

“Where in the Dark Forest have you been? You can’t just disappear on us, you know! You should have at least left an apprentice behind!”

The Mooclan medicine cat spoke up next. “Copper, you should have thought about your legacy too! I heard naughty kitties get tick duty!”

“I’M NOT AN APPRENTICE, SALTFACE! YOU THINK I’M SCARED OF A LITTLE TICK DUTY?”

“Awwh, is someone mad? Is someone maddy-mad at ol’ Freckleear? I was just pointing out that you’re a bit of a hypocrite!”

“STARCLAN’S KITS, CAN YOU JUST PICK A PERSONALITY AND STICK WITH IT?”

The bickering was interrupted by Skuashriek hissing in rage. Zinniaclan’s medicine cat, Flamefur, perked up a little when they saw her. “Oh, I didn’t see you there! Is this your first time? What’s your name?”

“It is my first time, my name is Skuashriek, and can we please get on with this thing? My paws are tired.”

“Oh, right!” Flamefur approached the river, and gestured over to it. Skuashriek stepped forward, gazing at her own reflection in awe. “You just take a drink from this, and you’ll go right to Starclan!”

“Is… is that safe?”

“Completely! I’ve been to a lot of half-moon meetings before, and I’m still alive!”

Skuashriek readied herself, and lapped up some of the water…

Then, she fell asleep.

Moon 12, part 1

“Alright, you’re good to go. Your leg… your leg healed great. No permanent damage… no…” Skuashriek yawned. The day just started but she felt like her energy was drained just by getting out of her nest. She’s only working in the medicine den today because of the bad weather. And… also because some cats needed the help. Like Rimeheart. Hopefully he doesn’t hurt that leg for a third time.

Neither she nor Crevasserise are doing great right now. Crevasserise is getting pretty old, so it wasn’t surprising when his joints started to protest.

“I swear, every time we think Auburnkit’s all better, he up and goes into a full sneezing fit again! I get that cats can’t control when they heal, but… come on, two medicine cats can heal a sick kit just fine!”

Skuashriek sighed, trying to ignore how tired she was. “…I’ll go check on him. You get some rest, alright?” And with that, she walked over to the nursery.

What she saw was… a little interesting, to say the least. Clementine was taking a nap, and Auburnkit was sniffing a little sprig. Auburnkit didn’t notice that Skuashriek already saw the plant, so he, as sneakily as an exited puppy (not sneakily at all), stuck the end of the sprig in his nose.

“Auburnkit.”

The kit flinched, letting out a small squeak, before turning to look at Skuashriek.

“Oh… hey… I’m… I’m still kindaaaAAAACHOO! …ugh… sneezy.”

“Is it because of the cold or you sticking a plant up your nose and thinking that we wouldn’t notice?”

“Um… the cold! Yeah. The… achoo! …the cold. Yeah.”

Skuashriek wasn’t amused. She picked up the kit by his scruff and brought him to the medicine den, placing him in front of Crevasserise.

“Hey grumpy. Auburnkit has a trick to show you. Go on, show him what you can do.”

…Auburnkit didn’t want to follow Skuashriek’s instructions. His superb plan would be foiled by him being watched. “Um… I… I can’t!”

Skuashriek tilted her head. “And… why is that?”

“I need gold! Yeah. Gold. To fuel my awesome trick… powers!”

The awful excuse repeated in Crevasserise’s head for a good 5 seconds… and then he realized. “Have you SERIOUSLY been FAKING SICK TO GET MORE HONEY?”

With that, Auburnkit did what any normal toddler would do when not getting what he wants: Throw a hissy fit. Now he has to be dealt with again!

Skuashriek can’t have one peaceful moment in this damn clan.

Skuashriek has been feeling worn down lately.

The weather has been bad lately, and Crevasserise can feel it in his bones.

Auburnkit’s running nose is gone.

Crevasserise learns that Auburnkit has been using him for something.

Rimeheart’s broken bone has healed.

Moon 11, part 3

Tw: animal illness

Skuashriek and Crevasserise were in the medicine den, making somewhat pleasant conversation. There wasn’t a lot of work that needed to be done as far as they were aware aside from checking on the current patients and making sure they’re alright.

“So, you’re telling me that you had a friend that could speak… to bees?” Crevasserise asked.

“Not just bees! Flora could understand and speak to a good few species… although, that does have the consequence of not being able to hunt without crying at the thought of killing something that has feelings. I always hunted for her because of that…”

“Yeah, I don’t think I’d be able to handle hunting if the prey told me that it had hopes and dreams.”

Eskerstar walked into the medicine den while the medicine cats were talking, with Auburnkit close behind her. “Skiashriek, Crevasserise, do you guys have a moment? Cinnamonpuddle and I found this kit- Auburnkit, while we were on patrol. We know he’s sick, but I just want to make sure it isn’t something like kittencough or silvercough!”

“Noooooo… dob’t… I dob’t… choo! I dob’t wanna…” Auburnkit was hanging onto Eskerstar’s leg for dear life, sniffing after he sneezed again.

Skuashriek approached the kit. “It’s alright. We’re not gonna do anything scary. Worst case, you might not like how the herbs taste.”

Skuashriek picked up Auburnkit, who loudly complained about this whole thing. Crevasserise poured some honey on a makeshift bowl made of dock leaves, before Skuashriek put Auburnkit down in front of it.

“Here’s a deal: We’ll give you this nice sweet treat, and you’ll behave, alright? Plus, if your throat hurts, then this might help it.”

Auburnkit, having absolutely no idea that lying exists, started lapping up the golden liquid in front of him. It didn’t taste as sweet as he was expecting, but it was still a nice gesture. While he was doing that, Skuashriek gently put two of her front toes on his head.

“Mmmm… he’s a little warm.” She pulled her paw back, then sat in front of the kit. “Auburnkit, can you open your mouth nice and wide?”

Auburnkit opened his mouth, and Skuashriek lowered her head to look inside. It just looked a little red, and that was it… Skuashriek hastily ended that step when Auburnkit looked like he was going to sneeze once again. Thankfully, it was just a false warning.

Skuashriek approached Eskerstar, with Auburnkit following her close behind. When Auburnkit was close enough to Eskerstar, he waddled up to her and plopped down by her side.

“It seems like he just has a cold. I suggest that he stays in the nursery for now until he heals. If he starts coughing, go to the medicine den immediately just in case it has progressed. Also, Eskerstar, I’d like you to visit us for a few days just in case you start showing symptoms. I haven’t heard a lot about kits infecting adults, but it’s still very possible. You got all that?”

“Yes, ma’am. Now, Auburnkit, let’s go to the nursery!”

“…ugh… ok…”

Auburnkit has a running nose.

Moon 8, part 4

Back in Lightclan’s camp, things have been happening as normal. Lightclan decided to prepare for Leaf-bare by stockpiling as much herbs as they could find, just in case stuff like whitecough, silvercough, or greencough makes its way to them.

There have also been some… other uses for the herbs. Crevasserise was talking with Cinnamonpuddle when a confused, exhausted, but still otherwise healthy Taffy walked in the medicine den.

“Oh… are you… having a conversation? I’m sorry to interrupt, but… I’ve been pretty tired lately… and I keep having this nagging feeling that we’re all forgetting something… not just something minor… but something very important… I just can’t describe it…”

Crevasserise, being the (not-so) rational medicine cat that he is, just responded blankly. “It might just be a case of brain fog. I’ll allow you to skip out on a few patrols until it passes, alright?”

Cinnamonpuddle interjected, holding up the lantern that was usually kept on her side. “And if the rest doesn’t work, you can always clear it with some light!”

Crevasserise bapped Cinnamonpuddle with one of his paws, though he was chuckling at what she said. “Wrong fog, mouse-brain!”

“Oh, I know! Just saying, at least you can find your way back, unlike Rime… wait…” Cinnamonpuddle suddenly stopped when she seemed so enthusiastic before…

“…What’s wrong?” Crevasserise asked.

“Have… have any of you guys seen Rimeheart recently? Or Lightningpaw? I know they went on patrol sometime… yesterday? And… I don’t think they returned.”

Crevasserise and Taffy’s faces both turned to fear as they realized what might have happened to the two…

Taffy is experiencing some brain fog.
