Oh no, another fic appears! Sorry K, I'm not sure if you are into Red White and Royal Blue, but this is where your fic title took me <3 Thank you for the ask.

This fic title took me back to my rowing AU. I opened the doc, re-read it, hated it and then I basically re-wrote the entire middle scene as a result. Voila!

Henry isn't good at many things, but he is fairly good at rowing - something which is very deeply fine, until a transfer student from America turns up.

When Henry winds up being Alex's roommate on a training camp, they don't get off to a great start. Fortunately, their coach has other ideas.

Notes: As a former rower and rowing coach, I'm worried this could have gotten a little technical. I have put some diagrams at the end of the fic for assistance! Really, I just wanted to write about Alex and Henry in rowing suits/zoot suits.

Also, I apologise if some of the terminology is Australia-specific. I presume that we share a lot with England, but I know for a fact Americans call rowing 'crew' - so this is firmly Henry POV.

You know Spock totally decides it was lowkey logical that Uhura had a "tracking device" and he's going to get rare Vulcan mineral jewelry for all his smol dumb humans because he is definitely the only sane one on the Enterprise And that's how Scotty ends up with a new pinky ring with a faceted crimson stone Bones gets a titanium necklace with a small dropped bar of solid navy blue Chekov and Sulu both get delicate but nearly indestructible chains for their wrists; Sulu has a verdant square set in the middle of his and Chekov has a flower-shaped stone of golden sunshine on his Jaylah also gets a ring, with a stone of jet black and flecked with green Jim is almost impossible to get anything for. He wears no jewelry that Spock has ever seen and he gets into more trouble than any of the others combined so it has to be the most indestructible, the least likely to be lost. Of course Spock is not without his tricks. He's afforded the opportunity the next time they have shore leave and Jim drags him around from bar to bar with Bones getting spectacularly drunk before walking (stumbling) into a tattoo parlor on a dare. And it hits him. He pulls the artist aside and they have a quiet discussion about the inks available from all over the galaxy under the guise of picking one Jim isn't going to have an allergic reaction to while Jim sits impatiently and McCoy snores in a corner. There is one available from Vulcan. The most expensive, a blue like glacier ice and furious oceans and Earth's sky after a storm. It is perfect. Jim has nodded off, of course. But next to him is a PADD with a barely coherent note: "you pick a design Spock" he thinks it says and he valiantly resists the urge to draw out the word t'hy'la in his own hand in Vulcan for almost a minute before deciding it was now or never Because he loves Jim He loves them all but none more than Jim And now he can <i>find</i> them when they are illogical and dumb and he has to save them. And that's what matters. He will always protect his family.
