Sandhill Cranes

This morning I visited the Crex Meadows Wildlife Area, just north of Grantsburg, Wisconsin. Right now, Sandhill Cranes are migrating through there. A worker at Crex told me that at the last count there were 10,000 Cranes at the refuge. He expected the peak to last during the next several weeks. The best time to see them is at sunrise north of Main Dike Rd. and east of West Refuge Rd. During the day the cranes seek out nearby farm fields to feed on corn and soybean leftovers. They return at sunset to roost.
