At first, Charlie did nothing. She simply stared at him, utterly shocked by his sudden outburst. Slowly, feeling returned to her, and she realised how badly that had hurt. Tears started to well in her eyes. All that brashness, and façade of strength and devil-may-care came crashing down, and what was left was a frightened little girl.
She let out a whimper. Her chest seized too much for her to produce any other sort of sound. It wasn’t the first time someone had struck her. She was overwhelmed with a feeling of absolute terror and she struggled to stumble back. She tripped and pushed herself back against the wall. She had started to cry, although she made not a sound, just stared at the Doctor helplessly.
