It’s common knowledge that African-Americans oftentimes suffer the brunt of implicit (and explicit) racial bias from law enforcement personnel. But what about the high-tech systems used by police to capture and analyze images of potential crime suspects? Could this widely used technology be the new culprit behind racial profiling? According to a new report out of Georgetown University law school’s Center for Privacy & Technology, half of all American adults have their likeness stored in at least one facial recognition database that’s searchable by police. However, the growing use of these systems has resulted in a disproportionate racial impact on Black citizens. You have to worry about his life all the time. “If you’re a mother of a Black son, whether it’s a boy or a man, you live with never-ending, daily fear of what might happen to them when they go out into society,” says the worried mother. So the Facebook group “Moms of Black Boys United” was created for all those who are also living with the fear that their kids would grow up, be deemed a threat to the society and targeted by the police. The creator of the group is Depelsha Thomas McGruder, a native of Atlanta, but resides in New York. As stated on her organization’s website, Moms of Black Boys (MOBB) “is a group of concerned mothers who aim to make a difference in policy and perception impacting how Black boys and men are treated by law enforcement. We represent every race, age, socioeconomic background, marital status and education level. What we share in common is that we all have Black sons whom we love dearly, which fills us with both pride and fear.” Don't you think it's a brilliant idea?
