Special counsel Jack Smith moved to abandon two criminal cases against U.S. president-elect Donald Trump on Monday, acknowledging that Trump's return to the White House will preclude attempts to federally prosecute him for retaining classified documents or trying to overturn his 2020 election defeat. The decision was inevitable, since longstanding U.S. Justice Department policy says sitting presidents cannot face criminal prosecution. soo I haven't been posting much about law recently, and I want to start again by talking about something simple: what's the difference between civil and criminal law cases?
civil cases involve a claimant and a defendant (it can also be applicant/petitioner v. respondent, they are exactly what they mean. to those who are new, 'v.' simply refers to versus. in simple words, the main goal of civil cases is to sue or apply for remedies
criminal cases involve R (Rex, Regina: Latin for King and Queen/DPP: Director of Public Prosecution/AG: Attorney General) and the Defendant (aka the accused). their goal is to prosecute or punish offenders and to protect society!
sound simple enough, right? I hope you learned something today :)
