Removed the papery background, and actually, I love them a lot this way. Happy pride month to my first series of gay little guys and gals.
I think one of the most appealing things about Shadow Herald for me is that it’s just... three kids learning that their hyperspecific ways of dealing with the world are valid, but don’t work all the time.
Navaeli learns that she needs to play rough sometimes, that she has a right to self defense. Crislie learns that jumping thoughtlessly into action — into violence — can seriously put herself and her friends at risk. Meparik learns that subterfuge can only take him so far because some people genuinely want to help and actually talking about your problems is the first step towards addressing them.
It’s just satisfying.
Crislie and Vaerin used to be reddish-orange and blue respectively in their color language, but over time it’s evolved in a way that makes me think they ought to be yellow and purple instead. I like this a lot more.
Crislie: Honey, I have some good news and some bad news.
Vaerin: What's the good news?
Crislie: I'll never do it again.
🌟 Shadow Herald pls & thank you!
Crislie’s mother owns a small assortment of fancy chickens. Crislie mostly finds them boring, with the exception of a small brown hen named Lace, who likes to scream at both the rooster and the neighbor’s confused sparrowcat.
Happy Storyteller Saturday! What are your OCs running from, literally or figuratively?
Literally? Regent Elaina and the knights of the Irongardhe.
Figuratively? A whole host of fears and insecurities, many of them being parental or societal in nature.
Crislie’s run away from Gadlin because she feels bored, restless, and unaccomplished. It’s just about the only thing she’s run away from on her own independent decision-making. If the other two weren’t so vulnerable, she’d try to fight the Irongardhe head-on.
Mepari tends to run away from fights he can’t win, and people he’s afraid of losing. He’s not happy to be back in the Reaches again in Book Two to face these fears!
Vaerin would run away from Silamir and all the weirdness that comes with being a Herald if she could. Since she can’t actually run from this, she starts learning how to fight it instead... mostly.
Thanks for the ask!
Vaerin: Tell me one of your strengths.
Crislie: I'm a decision maker.
Vaerin: Alright... How about a weakness?
Crislie: I make bad decisions.
I wasn’t joking when I said that Crislie tames a direwolf by wrestling it.
