Jeffrey Freymann-Weyr, the producer and host of KDFC's State of the Arts, has previously moderated an Airfield Broadcasts panel discussion about Crissy Broadcast back in July at the Center for New Music. On Saturday, October 26 at 2pm PDT, Jeffrey will join us again as a moderator of the roundtable discussion, The Making of Airfield Broadcasts. His fellow KDFC colleague Assistant Program Director Rik Malone will also be participating in the discussion along with performing in Crissy Broadcast! Jeffrey wrote to us on behalf of KDFC, the official radio sponsor of Crissy Broadcast, about what first interested him and KDFC in the mission of Airfield Broadcasts and what he is looking forward to at the event! 

Airfield Broadcasts: What about the mission of Crissy Broadcast interested your station in partnering with Airfield Broadcasts as official radio sponsor for the event?

Jeffrey Freymann-Weyr: I’ve been intrigued by the idea of Crissy Broadcast ever since I heard about the Tempelhof Broadcast – it’s the very new, with music hot off the presses, combined with the age-old tradition of coming together to make music with people around you. It’s the sort of project that has taken full advantage of telecommunications and technology to help set up, but in the end relies on the instruments’ own ability to blend sounds, unamplified, and turn them into music in a vast outdoor space. It turns public space into public arts space – and reminds people that concerts don’t always need to conform to the traditional images we might have of them.

AB: As KDFC is the Bay Area's listener-supported classical radio station and Crissy Broadcast will involve many local arts organizations from throughout the Bay Area, how do you see Crissy Broadcast impacting the local arts community?

JFW: I can only imagine that the participants are feeling the excitement that goes with becoming part of a larger group – but they’re also (I think) forming some valuable connections with other performers, whose paths they might not have otherwise crossed. It’s a reminder to me of just how many ensembles there are (and individuals, brought together through the Symphony’s Community of Music Makers) who are making music of all kinds in the Bay Area. In this project, Lisa Bielawa is tapping into that, and starting an intriguing conversation.

AB: Should KDFC listeners look out for any special coverage of Crissy Broadcast on the air or online?

JFW: I’ll be having another State of the Arts feature on KDFC and KDFC.com with some more details as we approach the performances (and moderating a panel between the performances) and Rik [Malone] might be bringing his viola to take part in them – fortunately, there’s a wealth of information on the project’s website, which we’ll link to – so KDFC listeners who want to be able to wander in and around the performance will know how they can be part of the audience, and a little bit of what to expect.

AB: What are you personally looking forward to about Crissy Broadcast? 

JFW: I want to hear how it actually sounds – to have that many performers, with that distance separating them, combined with the natural sounds of Crissy Field – foghorns included. I heard a wonderful performance of John Luther Adams’ Inuksuit at the Ojai North! festival in Berkeley a year ago, which had dozens and dozens of percussionists spread out over a field, and the interaction with the air was really magical. There’s also the knowledge that it’s impossible to experience the piece as a whole – that where you are, and where you choose to move to determines the musical material and balance that you hear. I can’t wait.
