Вода не чистая здесь. Поэтому, люди обычно пьют горячий чай. Чайханы и кафы очень популярные. Мы с другими американскими студентами ели шашлык в очень дорогой и традиционной чайхане. Можно увидеть фото этой чайхана здесь. Там, мы слушали традиционную киргизскую музыку. Кафы как библиотеки, потому что можно взять книги у кафы, читать их дома, и позже отдать их. Я люблю эту специальную традицию. Популярные блюда самса и шашлык. Мне кажется, что в почти каждом блюде, есть мясо. Можно увидеть мой типичный завтрак в фото. Я обычно ем творог с сметаной и джемом. Это такое вкусное блюдо. Я предпочитаю молочные продукты в Кыргызстан больше чем в Америке. В Америке, я некогда не бы ела творог.

The water is impure here. Therefore, people usually drink hot tea. Teahouses and cafes are very popular. We with other American students ate shashlik in a very expensive and traditional teahouse. You can see a photo of the teahouse above. At the teahouse, we listened to traditional Kyrgyz music. Cafes are like libraries, because you can take books from them, read them at home, and later bring them back. I love this special Kyrgyz tradition. Popular dishes here are samosas/samsas and kebab. It seems to me that in almost every dish, there is meat. You can see my typical breakfast in a photo above. I usually eat cottage cheese with sour cream and jam. It's a surprisingly delicious dish (even if it doesn’t seem so). I prefer dairy products in Kyrgyzstan more than in America, because in America, I would never eat cottage cheese.

Исторически киргизы были кочевниками и жили в юртах, a теперь юг и север Кыргызстана очень разные. Люди на юге бывают мусульмане и более консервативны. Люди на севере бывают более либеральны. В этом деле, Кыргызстан похож на Америку. Всё равно, когда я была в Американском посольстве, они сказали что Кыргызстан остров демократии в Среднем Азии. Несмотря на это, в Кыргызстане конечно есть преступление, как бывает в всех странах, даже Америка. Если ты девушка, это опасно ходить по-городу после 9 часов вечера. Гендерные роли здесь отличаются от Америки. Например, я купила неактуальное обручальное кольцо, чтобы избегать мужчин.

Historically, the Kyrgyz were nomads and lived in yurts, and now the South and North of Kyrgyzstan are very different. People in the South are Muslim and more conservative. People in the North are more liberal. In this case, Kyrgyzstan is like America. All things the same, when I was at the American Embassy in Bishkek, they said that Kyrgyzstan is an island of democracy in Central Asia. Despite this, there is of course crime in Kyrgyzstan, as is the case in all countries, even America. If you're a girl, it's dangerous to walk around town after 9:00pm. This is because gender relations here are different from America. For example, I bought a fake wedding ring to avoid men and catcalling.

У меня занятия по русской грамматике и разговору каждый день с 9:30 до 1:50. Однa из моих преподавательниц учительница, а другой-профессор лингвистики, которая написала почти все учебники русской грамматики в Кыргызстане. Однa преподает в американском/западном стиле, и другая использует советский стиль.

На мой взгляд, советский стиль преподавания строже. Российские школьники выучат классические стихи с архаичными словами. Вариантныe ответы обычно нельзя. В первый день занятий, когда спросили: <<Как вас зовут?>>, я ответила: <<Тэйлор Пуул.>> Это было неправильно. Правильный ответ был <<Меня зовут Тэйлор Пуул.>>, а не <<Я Тэйлор Пуул.>>, <<Меня зовут Тэйлор Пуул.>> или любой другой вариант, о котором вы можете подумать.

Из этого опыта я узнала, что у обеих систем образования есть свои плюсы и минусы. На мой взгляд, советский стиль может быть и строже, но он учит вас как приготовить ко всему и как внимательно думать о словах, которые вы используете. С другой стороны, американская система, больше поддерживает индивидуализм. Но с индивидуальным выбором приходит индивидуальная ответственность.

AUCA is the university where I study. It’s the Harvard of Central Asia, founded in 1997 with money from the United States government and a non-profit run by George Soros. As you might have guessed from the name, AUCA operates under an American-style educational system, with courses offered in English and Russian. AUCA also has a partnership with Bard College, so some AUCA students can earn American-accredited degrees. I have Russian grammar and conversation classes every day from 9:30 until 1:50, with brief breaks. Because I am on an immersion program, no English is allowed. One of my professors is a schoolteacher who only speaks Russian, and the other is a linguistics professor who has written pretty much every Russian grammar textbook that exists in Kyrgyzstan. They are both highly qualified professionals, and one teaches in American/Western style, while the other uses a more Soviet style. It took a long time for me to get used to the Soviet style, and I felt constantly nervous while in class, but I think I’m finally comfortable.

In my opinion, the Soviet style of teaching is stricter and favors memorization. Russian schoolchildren often memorize classic poems with cumbersome and archaic words. Everyone is expected to be ready to participate at all times, and as a chronic daydreamer, I initially struggled. Also, deviations on answers are typically frowned upon. On the first day of class, when asked “What is your name?”, I replied “Taylor Poole.” This was incorrect, as the correct answer was “My name is Taylor Poole,” not “I am Taylor Poole,” “I am called Taylor Poole,” or any other variant you can possibly think of.

What I’ve learned from this experience is that there are pros and cons to both education systems. In my opinion, the Soviet style may be stricter, but it forces you to be extra disciplined. You must participate, be ready for anything, and think very carefully about the words you use when you speak. The American system, in contrast, encourages more individualism. But with greater individual choice comes greater individual responsibility, and much more opportunity to slack off.

Гроза в Бишкеке / A Storm in Bishkek

Я была очень занята в течение последних двух недели (и интернет был плохой по какой-то причине), но сегодня у меня есть время, чтобы рассказать всё. Начинаю с фотографией вида из моей квартиры. Последняя фотография этого вида была слишком облачная, чтобы увидеть горы. Поэтому я загружала новую. Можно увидеть, что отличный вид встречает меня каждый день, когда я просыпаюсь. Также, на этой неделе была гроза, так что горы выглядели чуть- чуть жутко. Можно увидеть видео грозы ниже.

I’ve been extremely busy over the last two weeks (and internet has been spotty for some reason), but today I finally have time to catch up on everything I’ve been doing. I’ll start with a photo of the view from my apartment. The last photo I posted from my apartment was a too cloudy to see the mountains, so I’ve posted a new one. You can see that I wake up to a pretty awesome view every day. Also, there was a thunderstorm this week, which you can see in the video below and made the mountains look a little spooky.

Погода очень жаркая и сухая. Поэтому, моя кожа лица была очень сухая и я купила этот корейский крем. Он очень хорошо работает. Мне повезло, потому что в моей квартире есть кондиционер воздуха, но это не обычно.

The weather is very hot and dry. For my non-Celsius fluent friends, at the top of this post you can find a picture with temperatures listed in Fahrenheit. Because of this, my skin was very dry and I had to buy Korean cream to moisturize it. So far, it works very well. I'm lucky because my apartment has air conditioning, but that's not normal here.

Мои занятия русского языка очень далеко от моей квартиры. Мои занятия в АУЦА (Американский Университет Среднего Азии). Я каждый день езжу на маршрутке или на автобусе сорок минут в час пик, чтобы приехать вовремя. Есть всегда пробка здесь. Эта пробка похож на Индию. Я покажу всем видео маршруток позже.

The above photos show views of buildings seen from my morning commute. My Russian classes are very far from my apartment. My classes at AUCA (American University of Middle Asia). Every day I go by marshrutka (public taxi) or bus forty minutes in rush hour to arrive on time. There is always traffic here that resembles traffic in India. I'll post a video of my marshrutka ride and the traffic later.

Где Я Живу/Where I Live

Я живу в столице Кыргызстана, в Бишкеке. Бишкек находится на севере, и почти все здесь говорят по-русски. Я живу в квартире в центре города с двоими сестрами. Они не Киргизы и не Русские. Они Дунгане. Дунгане китайская мусульманская этническая группа, но мои сёстры не мусульмане. Мои сестры очень международные, так как они хорошо знают русский язык, японский язык, и китайский язык. Они очень доброжелательные, как все здесь. Мне показали как ездить на маршрутках и где можно купить дешевые корейские косметологические продукты. В квартире, нет сушки одежды или посудомойки. Это обычно здесь.

I live in the capital of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek. Bishkek is in the West,and almost all of them speak Russian. I live in an apartment in the center of the city with two sisters. They are not Kyrgyz or Russian. They're Dungan. The Dungan are a Chinese Muslim ethnic group that has their own unique traditions, but my sisters have said that they are not religious. They are very international as they know Russian, Japanese, and Chinese. They are very friendly, like everyone here. They showed me how to travel by marshrutky (public taxis) and where you can buy cheap Korean cosmetic products. In the apartment, there is no dryer or dishwasher, typical for the post-Soviet world.

Когда я узнала, что я бы выла в Бишкеке этим летом, мне было очень счастливо. Я была в Алматы в прошлом году, и мне очень понравились горы Тиан-Шен. Бишкек недалеко от Алматы, и здесь также горы Тиан-Шен.

When I found out that I would be in Bishkek this summer, I was very happy. I was in Almaty last year and I really liked the Tien Shen Mountains (photo above). Bishkek is not far from Almaty, and here there are also the Tian-Shen mountains.
