"hey jimmy, recently i gained the ability to fit the entire world in my hands," as usual there is excitement to his steps as he bounds over to sit across from the girl. reaching forward and making sure not to touch any of her belongings on the table, he places his hands on the slytherin's cheeks. "see?"

jimmy was waiting for mimi by the library, her heavy books were scattered everywhere, but the girl was secretly having some chocolate frogs instead of reading. the two youngsters have decided to study together, but jimmy had high hopes on convincing mimi to do otherwise since the slytherin was too tired.

a smile lighted up her face as soon as she spotted the hufflepuff, but her mind barely had any processing time between mimi’s fast steps, fast words, and fast hands. “wha---?” jimmy stared blankly at the boy, her lips parting to answer him but her words never finding their way through her throat.

after a while she managed to find the perfect answer. “are you calling me fat or something?” the girl held back a mischievous smile, trying to look serious and offended to convince mimi she was being serious.

"hey star girl, can you quickly hold something for me?" miguel asks this out of the blue, when both of them are sitting side by side indulging in each other's company. he waits for her to stick her hand out before he places his own on it and offers a smalls squeeze, partnered with a bright grin. "thanks!"

her brows were furrowed and her eyes were focused, lips mouthing the words she was writing down, brain working fast as she tried finishing her parchment as fast as she could since she left to do it at last minute. 

even though she was focused, she could hear mimi talking by her side, and she was so used to him doing this her brain basically just separated a part of it to work only for him.  “sure.” without many thoughts, she extended her hand out, ready to hold whatever he would give her. 

the weight on her hand followed by a warmth, and then a squeeze, made her stop writing and slowly look up. she stared blankly at his hand now holding hers, then shifting her gaze towards his face and that stupid grin of his, feeling her stomach tickle with it. 

“ok, then.” her focus shifts back to her parchment, hand dropping back onto the table, but still firmly holding his. Her writing was fast like before, but her concentration was already gone, so she tried her best to keep her eyes on the papers in front of her, and never on the boy. At least not while holding his hand.

Her eyes widens at the other’s words, hand flying to cover her mouth instantly after the words had flown out of her lips. She always claimed to be someone who wasn’t superstitious, but when a phenomenon was proven to be true with evidence, it wasn’t something that she could pretend wasn’t a possibility.

With Miguel’s words, she couldn’t help the sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. She did not want to be the bringer of bad omen.

“I said it though,” she laments in a soft whisper, as if lowering her voice would prevent the gods from realizing that she had messed up, “what should we do now, Mimi? I don’t want bad things to happen.”

“is every detail really that important mimi?” she raises her eyebrow and looks at him. lianna was just teasing about the outfit he was wearing, he did look normal. it wasn’t bad nor good, it was normal enough for them to go on the walk. “i mean... if every detail was important, you could have at least dressed better, right?” she chuckles softly, “i’m just kidding.”

the first thing is that one specific ring of nostalgic laughter which echoes with the summer cicadas and vanishing crows at the final kisses of the sun disappearing into the slips of night. the next would be a young golden retriever barking as it dashes up to the porch to where a senile man sits on his rocking chair, silence falling naturally through a telepathic message as the dog lays down by his feet. the last would be a dolphin rising to the surface of a nearby harbor, clicking as it gently bumps its head against the back of a little child it has befriended over the days.

“miguel is a good child. he has his moments of mischief like all boys his age but i don’t think he would be the one who would have done this to you. i can vouch for him and i will continue to do so even if you don’t believe me.”

“ i love how positive you are miguel, it brings a smile to my lips. that optimism is what draws people to you.  you also have this certain boyish youthfulness to you that many people tend to lose, keep it. don’t ever lose it. if i can, i would like to protect it too.what was it that was once mentioned to me by your cousin? stay gold. lastly, i do know you hear this often but i love your smile. i suppose this all ends up being one thing. don’t they say you’re sunshine in human form? truly. i wouldn’t argue that.”

"i have something for you," miguel says as he walks up to the girl. it's easy to tell how there is something on his mind which captures both excitement and pride, filling the hufflepuff to the point he could probably burst at the seams. the hands which hid behind his back now appears with a seashell crown crafted carefully by the young boy. miguel carefully settles it on her head. "my princess, would you bless me with your presence by joining me for a walk on the beach?"

“for me?” there was curiosity in her voice, though her expression remained blank as her eyes scanned the boy’s face in search of a hint. miguel was always the drama king so he could be either exaggerating or actually be planning something big. there was no way jimmy could predict what was happening in his head. 

with a fast move, miguel gifts the slytherin. there was a little jump of surprise from her, followed by her eyes who got bigger thanks to the interesting object in the other’s hands. there was a bright smile over her lips when he placed the crown on her head, the kind of smile probably only miguel knew. “if you insist, well... what can i do?” there was a brief chuckle, a mix of silliness and embarrassment, and her hand naturally grabbed his arm to walk by his side. “did you make it yourself? shouldn't you have made one for you so we could match?” the slytherin enquires, arching a brow. “thank you, by the way.”

the classroom suffocates; packed with yellow and green ties, bodies squeezed together in the humid greenhouse. voices rose in streams of commotion; students trying to disperse into pairs and devin, a lingering, slight fifth year, felt the snubbing push against her back that had her stumbling out of the mass of slytherins.

eyes tight, skewed robes get righted and feet were planted down in the new space, hovering between the two seas. herbology was already hard enough for the teen; there were too many voices, too many conversations and snickers that ate away at her concentration on top of a deficient of skill. she was gifted with many things: a cleverness for theory and the acute talent for practical magic. yet, gentleness and patience eluded her. the things that couldn’t be acquired in the pages of tomes were foreign. restless, she felt, for the day she could stop coming to this space.

and now, they were being selected by the professor for a partner project.

she didn’t need to look around the greenhouse to know luck would not find her. already, house mates were being paired off with friends they were stationed with, acquaintances that she hadn’t formed over the years. remorse came in the dark sigh that slipped through. and avoidance, a tactic she hadn’t had to employ as fellow slytherin refused to meet her gaze.

the space around felt hollow.

“you two!” escape came in the shout of the professor. onyx orbs slid in the direction of the voice and made eye contact with the finger that pointed back at her. next to her, she looked, there was a boy; warm of hair and tender of gaze. her partner for the rest of the semester, she guessed.

“miguel song and devin moon, go grab your plant!” and then the professor was moving on, eyes leaving in search of another pair.

her limbs grew heavy with awkwardness. the hufflepuff was a savior, of grades and loneliness. should she tell him? would he even realize? instead, she settled for the known. when she turned to him this time, obsidian met toffee and devin bowed her head in greeting, silent. always silent.

He rolls up the parchment papers that other students had given him to read over and places them in a neat pile on the corner of his desk. “Miguel, let me ask you this one more time... You’re not here for the extra points right?”
