Good morning Sam! If you don’t mind sharing, do you have any bakery suggestions (or anti-suggestions, like Magnolia Bakery) in the downtown Chicago area? I’m going to be in the city next month with my sibling, so I figured I may as well ask someone else who bakes for their opinion on the subject!

Unfortunately I'm not sure I have quite what you're looking for -- because I bake I rarely go out for pastries and there aren't many to begin with because downtown is mostly coffee shops for workers coming into the city.

I will say, there's a Japanese-style bakery chain called Paris Baguette that's VERY good, and there's one of those in the south loop, at Michigan and 11th. Also if you want specifically cupcakes or cake, there's Molly's Cupcakes on Wabash just north of Roosevelt.

There used to be some good bakeries in Greektown but I haven't been over there in a hot minute and I never knew the names, they were just like, unmarked storefronts. Sorry I can't be of more help!

Following the sports metaphor and the idea that almost anything waveable can be used to channel magic, could that be why it's difficult to escape the Circles? If the Circles only teach staff-kinetics for magic, an escaped mage goes from being able to use the equivalent of a nice, standardized bat to hit a ball to using the home plate instead. It's possible, but the ball is definitely not going to respond the same way as it would to a bat.

I did, a long, long time ago, see it suggested that one reason why wizards were given super flashy robes and big conspicuous sticks was as a way of making them super conspicuous outside a circle, and this idea neatly dovetails into it.

It wouldn’t have to be even with particularly malicious intent, but just an entrenched idea of Tradition. And if you ever get out into the world you find that there’s actually not nearly as many perfectly planed and sanded sticks lying around as you had hitherto been used to.

Have you ever had the chance to try cinnamon creamed honey? I made bread earlier today and tried it and it just about blew me away with how delicious it is

I'm not a big cinnamon fan, but I do love creamed honey and particularly with sweet spices it's very nice, you're right! I like it with a bit of nutmeg, or a sprinkling of cake spice (which is basically just pumpkin pie spice with the cinnamon content lowered).

Creamed honey is a bit harder to find than ordinary honey and can be more expensive; I think the last time I looked for it I was still at my old job and couldn't justify the expense. I should go out and get myself some, I'm pretty sure I know where it's sold around here. I've also made it before -- you take crystallized honey and whip it with ordinary honey, but it's just not quite the same.

Where does the judge stand on the subject of "bad" movies (like Jupiter Ascending or similar films)?

The judge doesn't watch movies! but considering her opinions on "bad" books, the judge rules that if it brings you joy, it is a worthwhile expenditure of your time.

A question for the judge: is Truesight by David Stahler Jr. too cliche for a sci-fi/dystopia-utopia novel? (either way, I enjoy it)

The judge must recuse herself, as she dislikes teenage main characters, dystopias, and anything that even comes close to resembling The Giver
