Rules: Don’t take too long to think about it. Ten animes you’ve seen that will always stick with you. List the first ten you can recall in no more than 10 minutes. Tag 10 friends, including myself.
I was tagged by gonikonata, lancres and bombasticplastic, thanks a lot! Hopefully I didn't miss anyone. Also, sorry it took me this long!
Cowboy Bebop
The Tatami Galaxy (well, basically anything directed by Masaaki Yuasa)
Writing this post since I've made it through the first episodes of almost everything I was interested in. This is mainly for myself (because I'm already old and crotchety and can't keep up with all those titles out there), but feel free to check it out and judge my taste! I couldn't resist including some of my opinions too.
tl;dr version: Barakamon > Zankyou no Terror > Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun > Free! ES = Aldnoah Zero > Shounen Hollywood > Tokyo Ghoul
(Space Dandy is in its own separate category as I can't really compare this series to anything else)
WATCHING
Zankyou no Terror - the first episode had some amazing visuals, the music was great as well (not as good as Yoko Kanno's other works, but still incredibly solid nonetheless), but... yeah, there's still a 'but'. I know it's a bit unfair of me, but I always set the bar pretty high for Watanabe's series, which is why I'm a bit too harsh on ZnT. All I can do is hope that they won't break the 'show don't tell' rule quite as often in the future, because I rolled my eyes at almost every line exchanged between Nine and Twelve. In the end, this is not this type of anime you can judge after only one episode and given its pace so far, watching the entire show at once would probably make more sense... which is something I should've done in Higashi no Eden's case, but I'm way too impatient for that. I never learn from my mistakes.
While we're at it, for some reason the opening reminded me of Last Exile's OP... is it because of birds, zoom outs (well the camerawork in general) and filters? Although whoever worked on ZnT's OP went a bit overboard with After Effects.
Barakamon - as opposed to ZnT, in Barakamon's case you can be almost sure that the rest of the show is going to be in similar tone after just one episode. I love this series so much. So much. Also, thanks twitter for showing me this
Naru being voiced by an actual child makes this series flawless in my book. The Gotou-ben is very interesting to listen to too, although it's so hard to understand.
Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun - this might an ~unpopular opinion~ but this series works for me much better in anime format. For some unknown reason I could never read past 10 chapters, even though I've tried to on multiple occasions. Perhaps the VA work sold this series to me? Anyway, some of the jokes were dragged out a bit too much, I'll give you that, but overall it's still v. hilarious. I was laughing like crazy through the entire bicycle gag.
Free! ES - I'm so, so glad Rin has calmed down a bit, I really enjoy this meek side of his character. I'm slightly worried about this new guy though, please Kyoani don't overdramatize this...
Space Dandy - oh man, I really missed this show's craziness after all... and it's off to a good start! I'm already biting my fingernails awaiting my Masaaki Yuasa episode.
---
Haikyuu! - it's still incredibly well done (the direction blows my mind from time to time), but I'm worried that the upcoming episodes might bore me to death. imo the character interactions that happen in-between matches are this show's greatest strength after all.
Hunter x Hunter - I'm not ready to bid this series farewell after this arc. Anyway, the new OP is rad as hell and got me hyped for the upcoming episodes, especially for Alluka. I'm definitely not looking forward to endless discussions about her gender though, I'm already frowning at people who tag my gifs with "zoldyck brothers".
NEED MORE EPISODES TO DECIDE
Aldnoah Zero - I actually had it in my 'definitely watching' category but the more I think about Urobutcher, the more I realize how little trust I have in this guy. Especially after coming across this bingo
... yeah. Watching the whole series solely for Shimura Takako's designs is very tempting though.
Sailor Moon Crystal - let me be frank here - I just simply do not like these new character designs. I won't go into detail about it because I don't want to upset anyone (it's a sensitive topic for many after all), so let me just say that I 100% agree with this person's opinion. 3 ep rule.
Shounen Hollywood - this series... pleasantly surprised me? It might get stale after a while, but I enjoyed how intentionally embarrassing the first episode was.
Tokyo Ghoul - a strong contender for 'so edgy I cut all of my fingers on it' award. I'm sorry, it just really reeks of the stench of MATURE JAPANIMATION to me, but I suppose I could also interpret it as campiness. I'll do my best.
DROPPED
DRAMAtical Murder
Akame ga Kill
Love Stage - it took me 3 days to watch one episode.
Ao Haru Ride - don't get me wrong, the first episode wasn't bad, quite the opposite actually. But I've read enough of the manga to know how frustrating it gets after a while.
mokishie replied to your post:Oho, JPF najwyraźniej rozważa wydanie Mushishi!...
Yup! To bo honest though, I wasn't too sold on this show after watching the first episode and even considered dropping it, but since I had nothing better to do while I was back in my hometown, I decided to give it a 2nd chance and got hooked! It's a solid, recommendable series, worth checking out if only for Tatiana Maslany's mindblowing acting skills. But there's more to appreciate! I love how female driven this show is and find it hilarious how completely unnecessary and bland the male characters are in comparison (except for Felix; he was a bit too... tropey for my taste at first, but ended up being one of my precious babies). I feared that as cool and unique as the other clones are, they'll always feel a bit one-dimensional next to Sarah. Thankfully, the writers developed all of them very nicely, gave them some depth and showed us different sides of these wonderful ladies. As for the guys though... there's a noticeable drop in intensity somewhere between episode 6 and 9 and imo it was partly due to the villains being laughably unthreatening and caricatural. Come on, one of them is called Dr. Leekie. The season finale made me excited for the continuation though!
quierobl replied to your post: someone wrote meta on hwsk
I’m usually not up to writing Meta, but I love reading it.
Yeah, same! I'd love to write it too, but unfortunately I'm not exactly gifted with wit (or english skills, haha) so I have to count on other wonderful people :)
