Gaming on a whole new level
Gaming on a whole new level the Kraken!
So you got your tax returns in and you want to build a PC that will make you the envy of every one of your friends? Well we can help.
Behold a computer build to sell your soul to. We shall call it the Kraken and it will devour your wallet, soul, and melt your mind with its blistering speed.
Ok so here is what we have. This build isn’t for the faint of heart, or budget minded. It’s a no holds barred PC build on a level of professional gamers and computer enthusiast… such as myself (less the tons of money part) below is more of a dream build but its scalable to make the cost more affordable. Like most monstrous builds they can be done in sections and we’ll talk about that as we go.
Let’s get started.
First off the CPU. I decided to start with an i7 3770k it’s unlocked and ready for over clocking. WHY you ask… well why the hell not. Do you buy a sports car to drive the speed limit? Didn’t think so. Moving on...
CPU: Intel Core i7-3770K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor ($318.91 @ Amazon)
Keeping it cool. So as I have said before heat is the Tech KILLER. Water cooling has come a long way in the past years. This is what is referred to as a Closed Loop Cooler. Which means its factory sealed and tested. Good for you bad for customizing it. No worries though. If you wanted a water cooling set up you wouldn’t even be bothering to read this. Full liquid cooling build we will save for another guide. Long story short this cooler has a built in radiator much like your cars. It circulates water from the Copper block that sits on top of the CPU and pushes air across it. Which helps keep the CPU frosty even when under load or over clocked. That said you have ONE POINT OF FAILURE. So if the thing stops working for whatever reason (pump dies, fans die, etc.) your system will not work until you RMA the thing or buy another cooling solution. Keep that in mind. We are talking about some serious performance and temperatures here.
CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i 77.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler ($99.99 @ Amazon)
Home Base. I’m not going to bore you with a crap ton of specs if you want to know that look it up. This board is rock solid as all the Asus ROG stuff is. Oh and did I mention its water cooling ready? Yeah just hook up your loops to the pre-installed ports on the VRM/NB heat sync and you’re off to the races. That said we won’t be doing that here. Not at this time anyway.
This board supports all our goodies, multiple graphics cards, RAID, built in wireless networking and on and on.
Motherboard: Asus Maximus V Formula/ThunderFX EATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($354.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Speed is in the response time. Memory is memory except when you’re trying to get every drop of performance out of your system. We didn’t monkey about here. Behold the Dominator platinum DDR3-2400. One of the fastest memory speeds and CAS latency on the market and designed to go the distance. This build isn’t about saving money it’s about building a rocket ship (within reason).
4 sticks of this dripping deliciousness will fill all your memory channels with go go power.
Why fill all the channels? Well which can you cram more cars on a 4 lane highway or an 8 lane highway?
Case, point, done.
Memory: Corsair Dominator Platinum 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory ($539.99 @ Amazon)
Ok over kill point number 1. Solid state Hard drives…mmm mmm mmm. When you want fast read wright times for your storage SSD’s are the way to go but wait we can make it faster? How? RAID! And I’m not talking about killing bugs here. RAID stands for redundant array of inexpensive disks. Why do we care? Well when it comes to reading and writing stuff the more places you can put it at once the faster you can get things done. In the proposed configuration the disks will be what are known as striped. Basically you have 2 physical drives made to operate as one. But there’s a twist. The one drive has two places to put things. Meaning you basically has a bigger hole to push data through or twice the wright speed capacity. Yay now things load faster…
Storage: Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($214.00 @ Amazon)

Ok so speed is nice but it’s pricy, so I included some 2TB drives for all your moves and stuff. WHY 4G’s of data storage??? Why not. It’s a dream build remember? Enough about storage time for the fun stuff…
Storage: Seagate Constellation ES.2 2TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($179.99 @ SuperBiiz)

Lock up your daughters. Let’s see. I can’t really say there is much better out there when it comes to pure graphics processing power than the NVidia GTX 780Ti with 3 GB of DDR5 memory… except if you have more than one! Yay we do… This is a gaming build. Better / more graphics processing equals better game play experiences. So if you have more than one graphics card then logically you will have an even better experience Mr. Spock.
The 780Ti is one of, if not, the fastest GPU standalone card on the market. With it’s internally over clocked chips and cooling it’s a soul eater all by its self. Don’t believe me? Read the reviews and benchmarks. I have.
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 780 Ti 3GB Video Card (2-Way SLI) ($699.99 @ Newegg)

The box it goes in. So you’re going to drop 4 grand on a pc, might as well put it in a case that means business. This bad boy is water cooling ready, has plenty of space for wire management (really important for air flow) and looks pretty damn good if you ask me. The big window on the side lets you show off your baby too!
Case: Corsair Air 540 Silver ATX Mid Tower Case ($140.18 @ NCIX US)
The case comes with 3 140mm fans but if you’re really serious about airflow and quiet performance you throw all those away and get better ones (sorry Corsair) I chose the Xigmatek fans due to their size speeds and noise level. At around 18db you can barely hear them if at all. And with 3 that’s 3x the airflow keeping your expensive toys frosty.
Case Fan: Xigmatek XAF-F1454 90.3 CFM 140mm Fan ($23.99 @ Newegg)

You’re going to need some serious juice to power this monster. So the Corsair Pro 1050w PSU is one way to get the job done. its semi modular which means if you don’t need all the wires it comes with no problem just don’t plug them in. it’s also 80+ Gold which means even under serious load it will still hold its power output. Super important if you’re playing BF4 at 1080p for 8hrs straight on your big screen.
Drops in power can put un needed strain on your components and cause them to fail. Something to think about.
Power Supply: Corsair Professional 1050W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($238.24 @ TigerDirect)
WHY THE HELL NOT: Icing on the cake. A Blu-ray burner reader combo drive of death. It’s an optical drive that does it all… nuff said.
Optical Drive: Asus BW-16D1HT Blu-Ray/DVD/CD Writer ($94.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $4047.22
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

Now let’s say you don’t have 4k to drop on this bad boy. No big deal you can save yourself almost a grand by stepping into it little by little. By ordering just one GPU will save you a cool $700 off the top. And scaling back the RAM will save you over $100 as well. Things to think about. Also if you’re thinking about buying a system and upgrading it later make sure you get the major components in the beginning. Upgrading your mother board is a pain. Go ahead and get it now and upgrade the processor or ram or GPU later. Just a thought. Hope you enjoyed the read. For a full breakdown visit PCPartpicker and remember DON’T BE A PAWN!
