Moonlight scattered across the floor of the old cathedral. Time had eaten away at it, the forest reclaiming the place. Anything sacred about this place had been desecrated long ago, swallowed by darkness and too many deaths to count. In a way, he had been one of the victims of this place, at least the man he once was, had been. But it had been quiet for nearly twenty years. In silence, he sat on the crumbled remains of what had once been a mighty column. Red eyes shimmered in the low light as he surveyed a once familiar and foreign landscape. He’d been here before, ages ago, awoke from death not too far from this very spot in a dungeon beneath the crumbling castle by the Rhein. And yet he felt compelled to return, perhaps he had hoped for answers, to stir memories that the sword had locked inside his own head. He wasn’t certain.
