This was it for Brandon, the final lap of a four-year run that had given his teen years pretty much all of their meaning. Outside of debate, Brandon didn't do much else. His dreams of sports superstardom had faded in his early teens, and his life away from the squad was a small cycle of comfortable routine...He might be tired and cranky and homesick with he arrived at debate tournaments at eight in the morning, but once that round would start, he'd sizzle with energy, so engrossed that time would just disappear. He was most alive in these moments, filled with a sense of purpose, as though he suddenly had access to the American Dream.
