“My husband should be here soon, along with some other neighbors. Do you like fruitcake?” Clara asked, smiling.
Not wanting to disappoint her, Skylar nodded. “Oh yeah, fruitcake is great! Thank you so much!”
“I’m glad.” She smiled.

“My husband should be here soon, along with some other neighbors. Do you like fruitcake?” Clara asked, smiling.
Not wanting to disappoint her, Skylar nodded. “Oh yeah, fruitcake is great! Thank you so much!”
“I’m glad.” She smiled.
“I’ll be with you in a sec,” said a voice from behind Skylar. He turned and saw an elderly but kind woman. She blinked upon seeing his purple face but her smile never faded. Skylar’s heart felt lighter than ever before in his life.
Zoe raised an eyebrow. “Really? You’ve never had juice?” Skylar nodded, feeling like a sort of abnormality, but Zoe merely laughed. “Well then, it’s much too early in the morning to get you something. Better stick with your coffee instead.”
They moved over to the bar. Skylar didn’t want to have juice, if he was being honest, but he didn’t want to refuse Zoe. She sat down next to him in the seat. “So what do you want?”
Skylar met her with a blank face. “I-I actually don’t know any juice,” he admitted. “I’ve never had any before.”
Hungry, and unwilling to eat the fruitcake, Skylar began to make himself a grilled cheese. It can’t be that hard, right? He then proceeded to drop the pepper into the frying pan.
“Sorry, we just opened for the day,” the woman explained, and Skylar felt like an idiot. He couldn’t have checked the open hours?
“That’s my bad,” he laughed apologetically. “I’m new to town,” he explained.
“Oh, well, welcome!” she smiled. “Anything I can get you?”
Skylar looked over at the menu, which wasn’t a huge selection, but a good one nonetheless. “1 cappuccino, please,” he ordered, and the woman smiled as she calculated his total and got his drinks ready.
“Zoe, are you going to help out?” the woman called out. With a start, Skylar realized he wasn’t alone in the coffee shop.

After some time, everybody left, wishing him luck at his new job and welcoming him to the neighborhood. That is, except Jacques, the strange old man who kept talking to himself. Feeling a bit uncomfortable, Skylar tried to usher him out the house.
