Dimethicone crosspolymer (also called silicone elastomers) are commonly used to modify the rheology and sensory properties of personal care formulations. These silicone elastomers are based on cross-linked dimethicone and are usually provided in the form of swollen gels containing various silicones, such as cyclopentasiloxane or dimethicone. Dimethicone crosspolymer not only exists in the form of an elastomer gel composed of a silicone elastomer swelled with a silicone fluid, but also exists in the form of powders, emulsions or surfactants.
Dimethicone crosspolymer may help to improve the appearance of dry skin and flakiness. Dimethicone crosspolymer is occlusive, which means it can protect the skin and prevent moisture loss from the skin surface. The emollient properties of dimethicone can help to soothe the skin and give it a hydrated appearance without leaving the greasy residue left by other hydration components.
In addition, Dimethicone crosspolymer reduces the tackiness of the formulation. It imparts a dry, non-greasy, but silky smooth and exceptionally pleasant skin feel. Dimethicone crosspolymer can also temporarily reduce the appearance of unsightly fine wrinkles, thereby making the skin complexion smoother.
Dimethicone crosspolymer is also an excellent ingredient in hair care products and hair conditioners. It provides controlled conditioning effects and makes unhealthy and damaged hair look smoother and feel silkier.
Dimethicone crosspolymer are also used as thickeners in the preparation of water-in-silicone formulations by increasing the viscosity. In addition, Dimethicone crosspolymer can be used as stabilizers due to their natural compatibility with various lipophilic active ingredients, such as fragrances, UV filters, and anti-aging active agents.
