Rinnie was done with Crossweave's shit a decade ago
Rinnie regained control of her vocal cords. “You just want me under your thumb,” she sneered.
“It is not like that at all,” Crossweave continued, his voice remaining measured. “I promise that working on this team would be nothing like working with the Medical Corps. I even worked it out with Big Navy that you would be directly commissioned to Captain. You care for your country, do you not? This would directly benefit them.”
“I could serve Edansa better by preventing wars than prosecuting them.” Rinnie scooted back in her seat, the wooden legs catching on the carpet slightly. She couldn’t make out the look on Crossweave’s face, nor did she care to.
“The Navy doesn’t…” he began, but she’d heard enough. The Navy had ruined her life once and she wasn’t going to let it do so again.
“I have no interest in coming back to the meat grinding machine that is the Navy, Gavril, especially if it means working for you,” Rinnie seethed as she stood up. “One Corps is much like any other, just with different window dressing. Find someone else to help you.” She did not slam the door behind her, but she wanted to. Oh, did she want to.
This scene has undergone so many revisions...
“Can I know more about this team and their jobs?” Rinnie asked, gauging. This offer would need to be worth it if she was going to willingly not pursue the project her sights were set on.
“I cannot discuss it with you here. But I promise I will make it worth your while.”
Rinnie’s right eye twitched.
“You, more than most people, should understand I like to know what I’m signing up for,” Rinnie said through gritted teeth.
“Not here,” Crossweave persisted, his gaze intense.

Gavril has a few close friends, but he also works in Intelligence so he is also of the belief of keeping his enemies closer. He knows a lot of people, but doesn't consider most of them friends.

“I have a business proposal for you.” He smiled in a way that Rinnie was sure he meant to be encouraging, but was instead off-putting.
Rinnie raised an eyebrow. “Go on.”
“I am putting together a team and require someone with your particular… skills.” Crossweave waggled his fingers slightly and his eyes drifted downwards to the slight amount of cleavage Rinnie’s blouse revealed.
“To which skills are you referring?” she asked.
His grin showed more teeth. “Why, the skills that got you here, of course.”
