“ luz. “ he groaned out rather tiredly, moving his head so now his chin was on her shoulder. “ luz. “ he murmured again, “ I missed you. “

“He doesn’t treat you right, does he?”

Her call echoes across the empty street – at almost 4am on a cold Gotham night, the pavement outside the Iceberg Lounge is slick with what remains of earlier rain and the curtains have been drawn in all but a handful of the apartments that stare down at them from overhead. The neon never goes out. Mary hears the eight-foot tall bulbs hum.

“Always running around after him.” She had been leaning against the building, smoking (waiting for the car, bored, tired, a little drunk and feeling sick and sour from it) but now turns to tug at Orson’s coat. He lifts her, settles her in the crook of him arm; she coils her fist around his lapels and watches Mezzo with curious eyes.

“Must be hard for you.”

         that   MUST   have   also   been   the   reason   dino   was         [   .   .   .   ]         CONFESSING   now.      right   here   ,      RIGHT   NOW.      and   all   or   nothing   ,      with   a   BUNDLE   of   flowers   held   out   to   ercole   as   a   CHERRY   on   top.         had   it   been      ANYONE      else   ,      ercole’s   sure   he   would   have   SHOOED   or   scared   them   off   by   now.      but   ,      dino   wasn’t   just   ANYONE.      ercole   would   very   much   consider   him   a   FRIEND   ――   something   rare   already.      maybe   even   closer   than   that.      but   that’s   a   thought   he   was   SURE   he   would   never   have   to   face.      yet   ,      if   he   was      SO      SURE      he   felt   nothing   more   than   KIND   feelings   towards   the   other   now   ..      why   was   he   so   goddamn   NERVOUS   ?

      ❝      ..   heh.      eheh   ..      ❞         ercole      AWKWARDLY      chuckled   ,      staring   down   with   a   bit   of   a   BAFFLED   expression.      some   part   of   him   was   PRAYING   this   was   a   joke         [   .   .   .   ]         but   the   OTHER   part   of   him   ,      the   part   that   was   telling   him   to      ADMIT      as      well      ,         the   part   that   had   him   BLUSHING   like   a   madman   ,      wasn’t.         ❝      ..   sei   serio   ?      ❞         his   hands   were   FAR   from   reaching   out   to   take   the   gift   ,      instead      WEAKLY      fumbling   with   one   another   just   before   his   stomach.      he   didn’t   UNDERSTAND   ―――   what   was   there   to   LIKE   ?      maybe   that   ego   of   ercole’s   own   could   EASILY   list   of   plenty   of   things   ,      but   ..      in   being      CAUGHT      off      guard      ,         that   ego   couldn’t   stand   its   ground   ,      and   he   had   to   FACE   the   reality   of   it   all.      

            and   one   last   PART   of   him   couldn’t   even   FATHOM   the   idea   that   there   could   be   someone   JUST   as      sick      in   the   HEAD   as   him.         ❝      you’re   ..      joking   ,      sì   ?      this   is   a   JOKE   ?      ❞         please   ,      please   tell   me   it’s   a   joke.
