Inari, Konkon, Koi Iroha Episode 5
Can’t we all just get along?
What They Say: Content: (please note that content portions of a review may contain spoilers) Episode #5: “Jellyfish, Friends, Summer Storm” The four friends have what should be a fun overnight at the beach, but Marutamachi and Sumizome aren’t getting along. Can the trip–and their friendships–be salvaged? Meanwhile, Uka may have given away more of her power than she thought…
The Review A beach episode? So soon? Well, this being Inari Konkon, we can expect the end goal isn’t fanservice but friend service.
Inari and her friends are off to the seaside, courtesy of Inari’s parental units. I’m so used to the ‘parentless child’ syndrome that permeates anime that it’s always nice to see a heroine who comes from an average and intact family. Inari’s mom and dad strike me as realistically dorky as well. (We find out later that Inari’s Dad is a manga artist. Geekiness really does run in the family.)
Of course, Inari is sorta dorky too, which is what makes her great, she’s very relatable. (The jellyfish in the title reminds me of Princess Jellyfish, but Inari’s group isn’t as hopeless as those girls.) Of course when the girls get to the beach we discover that Keiko can’t swim but looks great in a swimsuit. Sumizome we already knew looked good no matter what, which leaves the flat-chested Inari and heavy Maru-chan a bit bummed out. Not that they stay that way for long, they hit the waves and we get to the real crux of the problem in this episode, jealousy.
Maru admits to Inari that Sumizome rubs her the wrong way. I can understand where Maru might feel intimidated, but she hasn’t really taken the time to talk to Sumizome. She just assumes she’s a ‘popular girl’ and that she can’t relate or that they don’t share any interests. We, the audience, know that Sumizome isn’t really that popular and that she does share some of the same hobbies as the rest of the girls. The bad vibes from Maru-chan aren’t lost on Sumizome, she picks up on it and has been keeping her distance.
This show certainly likes it’s oddball humor. I enjoyed the running gag about the surprisingly large waves and the dad calling out to see if the girls were all right. Usually in these beach episodes you get the overly assertive guys hitting on the ladies, but here we get a cartoony body builder guy who is absurd. He keeps trying to pick up Sumizome only to be scared off by Keiko, or Inari disguised as Keiko. He is probably the least threatening dude I’ve ever seen, but Sumizome freezes up in his presence.
It takes Keiko to make Maru realize that Sumizome isn’t going to take her spot in the group, and that she’s not some stuck up girly-girl. In fact, it’s the fact that she’s actually friendlier than Keiko that makes Maru realize she’s made a mistake. However, at the same time Sumizome thinks that Keiko is now upset by her behavior, which is entirely Inari’s fault for transforming into Keiko. Inari gets tongue-tied at the worst possible time, and Sumizome breaks down admitting that she wishes she were more outgoing like Inari. That’s when Inari’s powers start to loose control once again. Jealousy is spreading all around in this group!
In Summary: I can relate to Inari in this episode, trying to bring a group of friends together during a summer getaway. Her angry freak-out at the lack of understanding between Maru and Sumizome brought back some memories of my own failed attempt at such… Of course Inari messes up again when she attempts to scare off a body-builder guy with her powers. It appears that’s Inari’s powers come with quite a few use clauses that we don’t fully understand. A simple wish by Sumizome to be Inari results in a cliffhanger short circuit, and with no god’s around to stop it this time. It’s a given that Inari will patch up her friend’s problems, but we have to wait until next week to find out how.
