Your name is Dave Strider, and you are just now being reminded of that.

Oddly enough, all you had to do to be prompted by your identity was open your borrowed bedroom door. Jane stands directly in front of you, seeming startled by your presence, just as you are by hers. In her hands is a tray. Its contents are a bit of a mystery to you, but you deduce that the liquid is tea. It's undoubtedly one of the kinds she's always rattling off when she asks if you'd like some, even though you remind her time and time again that their names alone don't clarify a thing. As for the bread... well, you don't get a good enough look. Your eyes have already shifted back to hers. You're wondering how long she's been standing there. It couldn't have been longer than a couple of seconds, could it?

"David," she says, finally. "Janine," you say back. It's purely customary at this point, but warmth spreads in your chest regardless. You think she's going to acknowledge the food and drink she's brought up to you with words, but she stops short, probably when she sees the way your lips are curling up into their most authentic smile.

You can't resist taking advantage of her faltering. A couple of seconds is all you need to relocate your sunglasses. You clip them onto your shirt with little to no hesitation, and this is somewhat of a bombshell even for you. Your hands move down to hers where they caress her fingers before getting a grip on the tray.

Her patience and limitless affection astounds you. Jane astounds you. You tell her as much, calling her a saint and maybe an angel in the same breath. She gives you a look, and you can sense the "Oh, please," before it so much as leaves her mouth. You're full on grinning as you gesture in the direction of your mattress with a slight tilt of your head. As much as she appears to want to bring her elbow to your side or maybe nudge you in the shin with her foot, she takes your hint.

The tray is deposited on your end table and you hop straight into bed, outstretching your legs as you scoot in the direction of the wall to make room. You open your laptop, which you had left a little too close to the edge, and draw it into your lap. Jane is beside you in an instant. She's already at work fluffing and propping up the pillows that will be supporting your heads and upper backs for the next two hours, so you mutter a small affirmation that God blesses her, as you have before.

You're notified that she's finished by the assured noise her palms make when she claps them together, so you lay back, outstretching the arm closest to her in invitation. She graciously accepts, tucking some hair behind her ear before motioning down onto you.

As your computer is booting up, your lips find the top of her head. Not soon after, hers come to your cheek. The room doesn't feel quite as dim as it truly is as she settles more comfortably into your arms, the tea and bread forgotten for the time being.

It's not even a Tuesday.

Might I ask why you’re spending so much time in a cemetery?

i'm part of the vast species of the undead. i live in the cemetery, six feet under, in my giant coffin. i have a flatscreen tv and a ps4 in there.
