#TodaysLessonOnRacism @staceyabrams has caught the ire of racists everywhere. Let's ask ourselves why. 1. She's led the efforts to register hundreds of thousands of new voters in Georgia. 2. She has inspired the average American to excercise their civic duty. 3. She has inspired people of color to run for office. 4. She's nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. 5. She understands all economic stages of American life. 6. She was the first woman (& Black woman) to head either party as well as first Black minority leader in the Georgia Legislature. 7. @yale Law Graduate & JD recipient. 8. First Black woman to provide Democratic response to the President's (#45) State of the Union speech. 9. First Black woman to run for Governor of Georgia. 10. She influenced the election of 2 @DNC Senators to the US Senate, creating a Democrat majority. Systemic racism creates barriers, obstacles and attempts to discourage the creativity, ingenuity and leadership of people of color and other marginalized groups. #TodaysLessonOnRacism The greatest crime of racism is denying it exists. Too often arguments about the insidious impacts of racism get lost in opinions and intent. In addition when discussions are not quantified, "That not racist" is easy to defend. In addition refusing to provide factual info or create stories centered in POC highlight the depth of systemic racism in network and cable news. Here's what you should know: 1. The focus of immigration problems point everyone to the southern border while more than half of undocumented immigrants are still working in the US on expired visas financed by American companies. 2. Some of the appx 12,000 people in DelRio, Texas living under a bridge were originally from Haiti but left early as 2014 after devastating hurricanes and other natural disasters. They were living in South and Central American. For @sec_mayorkas to approve of migrating former residents that moved from Haiti years ago is equally racially insensitive as the fenced in holding facilities asylum seekers from the southern border children are forced to live in. 3. Whips are presently a part of @dhsgov daily tools in managing immigrants requesting entry into the US. The pictures displayed are no different than when Black people were slaves yet they were taken last week. 4. @hbomax @thewhitelotushbo is a recent and stunning dramatic study of privilege and how everyone is affected by it. It's subtlety can be confusing, even off-putting in the first episode but as with roller coaster rides, the buildup to the highest suspense and emotional points are intentional and well worth the ride. Each character has purpose and the actors execute with precision. No @potus. "The middle class did not build this country". It was already built using kidnapped Africans, on the spilled blood of this country's original natives, Chinese and Black folks who laid the tracks for what is now @Amtrak while being paid meager wages, by using "imminent domain" to eviscerate self sufficient Black neighborhoods during Jim Crow to build today's interstate highways where construction companies employed few to no Black and Brown folk. The first "middle class" were the Irish, Italian, Polish and other Europeans who emigrated first considered inferior until they were politically necessary to create a "white" majority. At that time, JimCrow was law so there were few to no Blacks employed, in Unions and benefitting from America's promises. Remember the creator of The New Deal did not include Black Folk, outlaw racism or penalize terrorism.. The VA Loan and Social Security did not Include Black soldiers,, maids, porters, and jobs Black folk took to earn a living.. Yes I voted for you because you were a better option than the party that would increase (and are tone-deaf to) Black suffering. Don't become the guy that is so comfortable with revisionist history you call it is truth. It breeds contempt and lowers trust. A spokesman for the Cherokee County Sheriff's office explained the murderer (whos name will not be spoken), "Had a bad day". Between this report and the January 6 terrorist Insurrection at the Capitol there should be no doubt racism is America's greatest problem. 3. When Will We Unite Against Racism? I was saddened to hear the absence of alliance to the Black experience by Asian Americans as we discuss the increase of violence against them. Everyhing they have been experiencing, Black Americans have experienced since the initial kidnapping of their African ancestors. The daily fear of police interaction is no different than the present Asian American experience. Yet not one person said, "This is identical to the experience of Black Americans". Will Asian Americans now partner with Black and Latino Civil roghts organizations or will there continue to be separation and lack of trust ? One of these women is a hero of the modern South giving voice to average American voters and their concerns, the other just refused to sign the @usgsa document that releases $9mil in funding for Presidential transition planning and organizing. No reason given, she just refused. Both women are "firsts". Both women are demonstrators of resistance. One to amplify voices too often stifled, ignored or minimized, the other to obstruct (big D) Democratic progress. Both will be recorded in history, one for being on the wrong side of the people. One of these women represents the highest constituency of Democratic voters, the other 55% of white women who knowing all they knew about his misogyny, racism, sexism and toxic aggression voted for him to get four more years. It isn't a far jump to believe their views on racial or gender equality mirror the presidential candidate they supported. "We are not mind readers" is a convenient but naive way of avoiding calling out racism and allowing its subtle toxicity to continue poisoning American culture. When racism isn't called out and exposed in the light, it grows into part of the ecosystem. If one of these women were white she would be decorated with honor for registering over 900,000 new voters and impacting the results of a traditionally Republican state. If one of these women were Black, today would've been her last day at work. She would've been fired for insubordination. Thanks you @staceyabrams! Your must-do thinking has changed the world. #TodaysLessonOnRacism Politicians capitalize on fear of the "other" because it works. Our stereotypes of people from varying origins or races combined with the need to be right can make a person who English is not their first language shy away from socializing at work or after work with coworkers. More importantly fear of the violent Black person is playing itself out in states like Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan and Ohio. The result could be a second term for the worst president in history. These irrational fears are heightened by a media so self conscious about their objectivity their judgement is skewed. Talking to people diferent from you helps broaden your perspective. Ask your Black friend the questions you always wondered about but were afraid to ask.
