William, of course, came from a family of high nobility who held titles to lands in and around Derbyshire. He grew up in the chilly, coarse North of England on the wild and frigid moors. He loved the nature as a child, and was always very active. As the eldest son in his family, he had the best tutelage that his parents could offer him, and was expected to master the 7 liberal arts like any good young noble. As his parents groomed him more and more intensely during his adolescence to make a good marriage and a better ruler, he became increasingly more taciturn, discerning, studious, and judgemental. No, he never forgot his love of outdoor activities and continued to practice them regularly, but he gave increasing weight to serious matters of politics as well. Oftentimes, he was known only to smile in his teen years whenever he was with his sister, Cecilia, of whom he had always been quite fond, enabling, and encouraging.

William was a son any parent would be proud of, well versed in the liberal arts, politically aware, a brilliant tactician, and a master of the sword. Everything recommended him from his birth to his personality. Doubtless, these qualities were to thank for his having been introduced to the young heir apparent, Alexandrina. Though William was nigh impossible to please, quick to judge, and prone to silence when faced with social situations, Alexandrina drew him very much out of his shell. Diana was the eldest child and only daughter of Reynaldo Sforza, duke of Milan. He was known to be a ruthless and exacting man, a formidable enemy both in negotiations and on the battlefield, and a merciless ruler. Because Diana was his only child until her 12th year, it was her to whom he first passed on all his ambitions, techniques, expectations. He was easy to disappoint, and brutal when it happened, and Diana quickly learned that she would need to be tough, ruthless, even savage to survive her father’s tutelage, to survive in the world, to be impressive, even. Louis was born to be king. From the moment he could speak he was taught the art of statecraft and politics, a training which was increased to exceeding rigour at age 5 when his father died, leaving him as the king. Louis was not properly coronated until he was 12 years old, and did not start ruling in his own right until he was 21 (when he wrested power from his mother and the Prime Minister). However, he was an active participant in politics from a young age, mostly because he was needed as the figurehead for the regency, but also because the Prime Minister Mazarin saw the opportunity to impress his political philosophy of an absolute monarchy in the young boy. Louis was, essentially carefully crafted into the kind of man capable and desirous of taking any and all decisions as his personal responsibility, but smart enough to know that he needed to listen to experts on specific topics before taking his decisions. 

Now Louis commands one of the most fearsome armies in the world, his court is the most splendid and glamourous, at once consisting of the height of entertainment, boasting the best artists and brightest intellects of the age, and is so utterly focused on his person and his will that there can be no question of spies and insurrection. Louis is incredibly proud of his kingdom, and of himself. He wants everyone to consider himself and France the best in the world, because, as per him, that was truth. He is not a blundering fool, though. He is calculating, clever, manipulative. Besides which, he knows that France can only be the best as long as he invests in his people and his lands. That being said, his need for self glorification and opulent displays of riches does leave something to be desired in terms of the rationing of wealth.

Louis is an inherently distrustful man who spends all of his time focusing everyone’s attention on himself largely in order to quell the possibilities for dissent amongst his courtiers and politicians. They cannot defy him if they are all in open war with one another for his favour. Though this is certainly a strategem that he was taught or urged towards by Mazarin, one must wonder if his dormant identity does not have something to do with it?

AMBITION: to rule the most glorious court in Europe and conquer all of his adversaries in order to become the new Emperor.
