She hasn't cried yet.
She thinks, really, she ought to. She should have broken down by now, she should have fallen apart somehow, but she hasn't. All she can do is sit in her room and stare at her hands, wondering how all of this had come to pass ---- and thinking about the million and one things she could have done differently if she had only tried. Hawke can still feel the weight of her mother's body in her arms and the way she had looked at her, as though Marian was the last good thing on this Maker forsaken planet -- which, perhaps, in her mother's eyes, had been true. She had lost both her other children already, her own husband long before then, and her daughter is all she had left. And now Hawke has no one.
The mansion feels desolate and empty without her mother's voice echoing around the halls and she is so wonderfully glad that she has been left alone. Varric, Aveline and Anders had all let her be once she had taken her mother's body out of the back paths of the city and laid her to rest, wondering how much of her mother was really her mother. A proper burial would come later, she imagines, something for her to sort out once her mind is no longer fuzzy and filled with images of blood and death and demons. Even now her hands are shaking and, for a moment, she struggles to breathe. How is she supposed to continue if she doesn't have her mother at her side? What is the point without Leandra? Everything she had done, all the fighting, all the danger --- it had been to make Mother's life happier. Better. And it was wasted.
It takes her a long time to realise there are steps coming up the stairs and a door closing - and when she realises what's going on she turns, lets her eyes flicker over the figure. Of everyone she had imagined she might see he was hardly the top of the list --- but given their connection, their relationship... It makes sense. Breathing out, she forces as much of a smile as she can, biting back the urge to reach out and pull at him.
"And here I thought you were out feeding the poor and defending the homeless. What brings you back to Hightown so early, Sebastian?
