The Crylis: Species Post #2
And here I present to you one of my favorite of the creatures I have: The Crylis. Meant for a fantasy setting, however, there is a slight thing that will make them suitable for a sci-fi setting.
The Crylis are a human off-shoot that live in the frigid tundras of the north. Literally living on ice. Physically, they resemble humans almost identically except for the fact that they are covered in a coat of fur similar to that of polar bears. It isn't quite thick enough for them to be like, "Oh my god, you look like you have fur!" from a distance, but it is enough to keep them at just the right temperature. Their actual hair (as in the tops of their heads and beards in men) are varying shades of blue, from the standard blue jean blue to a frosty ice pale blue. White is also acceptable, biologically. They can stand temperatures beyond that of most humanoid beings, able to live comfortably in temperatures nearing -50 degrees Fahrenheit. However, they are unable to live unscathed in temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit as they start to overheat at that point.
To compensate for this weakness, the Crylis are masters of cryomancy. The ability to manipulate the cold. In fantasy settings, this extends to manipulating ice and snow. In a sci-fi setting, they still can manipulate temperature, but not to such a grand scale, and instead rely on a synthetic second skin filled with coolant equipment to keep them chilled.
The Crylis are a highly xenophobic species and assume that any outsider is going to attack them. They don't necessarily attack first, but they will shut people out of their villages and cities until that person proves they are allies of the Crylis. And even then, they are watched like a hunter watches their prey. One wrong move, and they will bring harsh "justice." Naturally, there are exceptions to this rule among individual Crylis, but the species as a whole are not likely to change. The reason for their xenophobia is because at some point in the past, a lost exploration vessel woke an ancient beast of Crylis legend and it led to the destruction of most of the race. The beast itself wasn't an actual animal, but a magical automaton (or pure technological in sci-fi settings), but the Crylis feared it as their god of destruction.
The Crylis are capable of breeding with humans, if the human doesn't mind the slightly lower body temperature of the Crylis.
