It was impossible to overlook the castle that had mysteriously appeared over the giant hole in the center of the city, complete with a swarm of bats straight out of a Halloween movie; in fact, the scene was so surreal that its sudden appearance on screens in the surrounding area had initially seemed more like some sort of TV show abruptly being played (or, in the case of it being on his cell phone screen too, a strangely intrusive advertisement).
And then the bats had dispersed, and one of them had delivered him mail – like a carrier pigeon, except not a pigeon! And that alone was already really, really cool – but apparently the castle was a real thing that just... existed now. Just like that. Poof, instantly. Of course that was worth checking out – and technically he’d even been invited, if the letter the bat had deposited in his hands was anything to go by.
...But ultimately none of that really mattered, because Peter didn’t even get as far as the door. Merely stepping into the general vicinity of the castle itself caused the sky to shift from broad daylight to nighttime in an instant, and Peter stopped at the edge... and stepped back over it, into daylight. And back again, watching the sky darken at a rapid pace. Neck craned back to observe the sky, he didn’t initially notice that someone else was nearby, and by the time he did take notice, he didn’t know how long she’d been there. It was... that girl he'd met once, who had come from a place without the internet.
❝ Oh, uh... hey, ❞ he said, rolling his shoulders back a little as though attempting to come across as cool and casual, with dubious success. With one hand, he fiddled with the edge of his jacket, before making some sort of vague gesture towards the castle behind him, an awkward grin flitting across his face as he let out a brief, sheepish-sounding chuckle. ❝ So are you here for the, uh... the – ball? ❞ It was a sort of strange thing to say aloud; castle balls weren’t really a commonplace thing in 2012. Saying that felt like he was pretending to be medieval royalty or something...
