Here’s a project from the past to tide things over while I’m working on my next image for my project “The Bonds Between Man and Beast.”

These examples are from a full alphabet set of gothic-based, all-caps characters titled, “Gilded Gothic.” I designed and illustrated each of the characters traditionally (paper and ink) based on a sketch of the letter ‘C’ I had done earlier. All the characters were then bound into a hand made book. The book included a title page, a dedication to her royal highness, “By Request of the Queen, her Majesty’s Royal Alphabet Book.” This was a really great project to explore typography and book making.

This might be my new mascot, but she needs a name. Ideas? (Concepts for more senior port illustrations)

And here’s where “Totem” is at the moment. I had to stop and let things dry for a while. Next up are corrections, more light adjustments, more color into the tree, and human skull, then an atmospheric glaze. So close! :D

Here are some in progress shots of the oil painting for “Totem.” Rough background and skulls followed by the tree in greyscale to make the form read properly. Color to be added to the tree later.

Here are some color tests I did for the “totem” project. These were just meant to give me an idea of how I liked different color relationships together in the context of the piece. True color studies followed.

First value test I did for the “totem” drawing. This is not a full study, it is still very graphic, but gives me the idea of whether I want the background or tree to be darker than the other. I decided on the background group as the darkest, the tree as middle value, and the skulls as brightest.
