Rean slowly led his chocobo Badeaux down the wooden steps, taking careful steps down so as not to startle him. Even though he had full faith in Skylift’s architecture, Rean had found that the creaking wood and seemingly endless stairs were too much for Badeaux, making him freeze in place out of sheer terror. As a result, whenever Rean found himself passing by Skylift, he always had to dismount and carefully lead Badeaux down the stairs, making sure to not startle him in any way.

Luckily, Rean never found himself in Limsa Lominsa quite a lot. Even though he admired its pristine blue waters and their endless varieties of fish, the Scions had always found ways of keeping him busy -- not that Rean minded, of course. So when Jusis invited him over to fish, Rean was delighted at the invitation. Fishing with Jusis was always a welcome distraction from the Scions, plus he always found it oddly cute how Jusis, without fail, would forget to bring his bait.

Once Rean successfully climbed down to the docks, he spotted Jusis’ familiar figure hunched over and clearly embroiled in whatever he was fishing. His ears were perked up and attentive, his tail calmly swishing side to side. When Rean knew for sure that Badeaux had finished climbing down the stairs, he raised up his arm and cried out, “Jusis! Hey, Jusis!” With Badeaux behind him, Rean ran up to Jusis, plopping himself down next to him.

“What are you trying to catch, Jusis?” Rean asked, trying to resist the urge not to bat at his wavering tail.

Rean was used to waking up early. He would wake up when his little dog ears first detected signs of sunlight, rolling away from Jusis’ embrace and cleaning himself up before rousing Jusis awake. Of course, Rean would fail at that, and he would simply just give up and make breakfast for the both of them, him waiting patiently in the kitchen for Jusis to come strolling in. Almost always Jusis would wake up with his cat ears drooped low and wearing a stature that clearly said, I didn’t get enough sleep don’t bother me please. And yet, Rean would always greet him with his cheeriest smile, and Jusis, ever vulnerable to his charms, would give up his act and smile back at Rean too.

But today was a little different.

Rean noticed that the sun was already high up in the sky, and yet Jusis still wasn’t out of bed. How could Jusis seriously be still sleeping? Rean thought to himself. When would Jusis wake up? An hour later? A week later? A month later? Rean knew Jusis’ sleeping schedule by heart; Jusis would always, without fail, wake up before the sun was high in the sky.

Growing a little curious, Rean left the kitchen to go to their bedroom to check on Jusis. He opened the door just a little bit, his head poking through the crack to check up on Jusis. “Juuuuusis,” Rean sang out, “Are you awaaaake?”

What's your favorite song to play on your lute?

“A favorite song, huh? Well, I don’t really play my lute a lot to begin with…buuut, there’s a song I’ve been practicing lately with Elliot. It’s been playing non-stop on the radio, and I think it’s pretty catchy. Wanna give it a listen? I don’t think I’ll be any good, but I’ll try my best.”

The roar of the motorbike’s engine started to die down, first into a low growl, then into a harsh whine. With a grunt, Rean hopped off his orbal bike, making sure not to leave his tachi behind. Lately, Crossbell had grown more active, fiercer, even. The gangs that were usually located in the Old Quarters had grown rowdier, starting more fights and even defacing Orchis Tower, something that no other radical could have ever dreamed of doing. As a result, Rean had to work even longer hours, from the earliest hours of dawn to the late minutes of midnight. He would be lying if he didn’t admit that he felt the least bit tired -- no, if anything, Rean wanted to return to Orchis Tower and lie down on his bed and shut out the world. His voice was growing hoarse from having to corral all those lawless imbeciles and his fatigue was so strong that he feared that he could lose his grip on his tachi at any moment.

But once more, Rufus had other plans. Though Rean accepted his orders with another strained grin and a half-hearted salute, he was screaming in the inside about how goddamned ridiculous can Rufus get, and how can he not see their famed Ash Knight is tearing at the seams!? But as usual, Rean hid those problems away, tucking them deep underneath his chest and never letting anyone know of them. It was better that way.

The request seemed rather menial. Rufus had tasked him to pick up an ‘important guest’ at Crossbell Station and escort him back to Orchis Tower. That was all. Why couldn’t Rufus just get one of the lower-ranking soldiers to do it? Why not hire a chauffer and an orbal car? There were a million possibilities as to how Rufus can cater to this special someone, and out of all of them, it just had to involve him. With an irritated grunt, Rean pushed aside the train station’s doors.

Yet as soon as Rean entered Crossbell Station, he found himself at war with a thousand glaring eyes from citizens and nerve-wracking glances from employees. This would have bothered Rean a long time ago, but not anymore. Instead, he took a seat at one of the empty chairs in the station, staring out at the platforms. “Any time now...” He muttered.
