I stopped in at a Toys "R" Us at the mall near where I grew up after seeing "Masters of The Universe." It's clear that it's just a zombie trademark now like Pizza Hut and Bed, Bath & Beyond. I was stunned that it had zero merchandise from the big summer movie playing right upstairs -- "MOTU" was an absolute juggernaut back in the '80s -- which is toy seller malpractice. It seemed like they just laid out "curated" (I've come to loathe that term) overstock, and the classic charm just wasn't there, though I did nab a large plush Geoffrey for old times' sake. This ad from the glory days of 1983 says it all, the chain vying to keep up with the huge holiday demand for the great array of toys at the time -- I remember the tall, massive shelving -- scarcity and exclusivity now the order of the day. Look at the unbelievable prices, too, and check out Geoffrey decked out like John Carter of Mars.
