Calling All Captain Swan Artists!
Want to get to know other authors and artists in the fandom?
Want to get inspired to create some artwork?
Want to get to read an amazing Captain Swan story before anyone else does?
Consider joining the Captain Swan Big Bang!
We are in need of more artists for the CSBB this year, and we’d love for you to join us! Here are some questions we’ve gotten during sign-ups this year and last.
What kind of artwork can I make for this?
While a lot of people assume that we’re only accepting artists who sketch, draw, or paint (either traditionally or digitally), we’re also looking for artists who make gifsets, image sets, videos, edits, and manips! Sky’s pretty much the limit. If you can make something visual to go along with a story, then you’ve got what it takes!
Do I need previous experience creating content for Captain Swan?
You don’t need any experience making artwork for Captain Swan to join this!
One of our major goals with the Captain Swan Big Bang is to foster community within the Captain Swan fandom. Even after seven seasons and a finale upon us, there are always folks who are new, or who’ve been lurking a bit, and we want to welcome anyone who wants to join in and meet more people in the fandom.
We do have authors whose CSBB stories will be either their first CS fics, or one of their first. So know you are not alone!
How much artwork will I have to make?
It depends on the kind of artwork! Here are the minimum number of pieces:
Traditional/digital drawings or paintings: 3 per story
Image sets: 10 per set, 3 sets per story
Gifsets: 8 per set, 2 sets per story
Videos: 4 minutes per story
Edits/Manips: 4 per story
Whoa, per story? How many stories am I making artwork for?
Well, we’d like to have one artist per story! However, that depends on how many people sign up. If we don’t have enough artists to cover all of our authors, we might ask you to double up. So the more artists we have sign up, the more likely that the only people who make artwork for multiple stories are the people who’ve asked to!
Wait, so I do more than one story even if we don’t need people to double up?
Yes! If we’ve done all the assignments, and you didn’t get your first choice, you’re welcome to ask to make artwork for that story, too. Just ask us!
How long do I have to make artwork?
You’ll have about two and a half months. We’ll match authors and artists at the beginning of June, and then artists will get to read the work in progress and start to brainstorm artwork. We recommend that artists hold off on starting artwork until July 1st, because that way, if your author drops out (their deadline to drop out is June 30th), you haven’t spent a month hard at work for nothing. After that, finished artwork isn’t due until September 15th! So that’s two and a half months!
What if my author drops out, or I don’t get along with them at all?
Come talk to us! If you want to stick around, we can assign you to another author. We’re happy to handle everything to keep things as relaxed and drama-free as possible.
When is the latest that I can drop out if I realize I can’t handle the commitment?
Last day for artists to drop out is August 31st, which is three months after sign-ups end, and two months after we expect folks to start working on artwork. Plenty of time to decide! And please note, the drop-out deadline exists specifically to lessen the commitment and make it lower stakes.
How do we get paired with authors?
At the beginning of June, we’ll share a long list of all the stories that are being written for the CSBB! The list will include summaries, ratings, warnings, and any information the authors think you should know while you’re deciding what stories you’d like to work with. By the end of the week, you’ll email us your ranked list, and we’ll match you with an author!
What about getting to know people in the fandom?
We have a Discord server specifically for the CSBB! It’s currently only open to authors and their betas, but once story selection is done, we’ll be inviting artists to join. Meet new people in the fandom, check out people’s work, share your WIP with others, and help motivate each other!
