Okay, overall:
Seriously disappointed with the lack of Player content. I mean, fuck, it was the last season, would it have killed them to tell us his name?
Other people on the disc have also pointed out that Player wasn’t in the flashbacks and I mean- HE’S THE SOLE PERSON WHO PUSHED HER TO ENROLL EARLY WHICH LEAD TO MOST OF HER CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT? JESUS GUYS-
I mean, Player had ‘most of his development’ done by somebody a lot of people don’t like, so it might’ve been better in the long run, but it’s still really disappointing.
Also disappointed with the lack of the other members of TR being apart of the finale. They’re her family for godsake.
Same goes for the episode number, we only have two seasons with the typical amount of episodes for an animated show. [I’m guessing this season was rushed, again ]
In conclusion: I liked it, but there was... a lot of problems with this season.
Edit: I also don’t like the ‘there are others to lead the good fight” it just.. felt off.
Hey y’all, so after seeing the season four finale and thinking about it constantly what it really meant, I decided to write an analysis on Carmen’s ending arc. So here we go,
Carmen’s Ending Arc in the Season Four Finale and Why I Think It Wraps Up The Show Well
Ok, I know a lot of people weren’t satisfied with the show’s end. With the finale, and the end of Carmen’s overall arc. I’ve said before that Carmen Sandiego is mainly about family, but I’ve thought about it for a while and wondered why Carmen Sandiego would end like this. The thing is, the main theme isn’t family. At least, not with Carmen’s ending arc. It’s about history. Carmen’s personal history.
This has been said multiple times throughout the show. Carmen looking for “links to her past”. The set of Russian nesting dolls she had as a kid, Shadowsan’s mission to kill her father, A.C.M.E.’S case files revealing Tamara Fraser is the person who killed her father. The show isn’t mainly about family, although that is a reoccurring theme, the show is mainly about history, which fits because of the history we learn about in the show. Carmen was looking for her past all along, looking for her roots, her history, her mother, her “given name”.
She’s a globetrotting thief who steals from a criminal organization with her crew that she calls “team red” with law enforcement tracking her down, all while finding about connections and “links” to her history and past. That is the plot of Carmen Sandiego.
It had themes about family, sure. “You don’t betray family” a villain says, setting up the theme, ‘Family is with the people who treasure you and treat you correctly, not your given family’. However, that isn’t the plot, it is a reoccurring theme that is in Carmen Sandiego with its countless found family moments, but it isn’t the overarching plot of the story.
After getting help from A.C.M.E., especially Julia, who was assigned on the case to find Carmen’s mother, Carmen finally got to meet her mother, and finally had the strongest link to her past. Her arc was complete with that, after the few attempts that she allowed herself to make, she finally got her past. It just took so long because, well, having two organizations breathing down your neck, wanting to capture you day and night and having to continue with her lifestyle, doesn’t really let her have a lot of time to get all of her questions answered. So, after approximately four years after escaping V.I.L.E., and choosing a new name, a new way of life, Carmen finally unlocks her past.
Which, is really Carmen’s biggest arc in this show.
The finale has also been getting negative feedback about Carmen leaving a note for the rest of team red, and for going off to meet her mother. However, I think this ending makes sense because, well, family doesn’t have to always stick together even if it is a healthy family, and this show says that all the time. Found family in the show is pretty much everywhere, but found family is family. Meaning, it isn’t required for someone to stick with their family no matter what. Each member of team red has their own aspirations, their own goals, morals, wants, needs, so it makes sense for them to not always be together after the same goal. Carmen didn’t abandon them, she just isn’t constantly physically by their side, and that’s ok. She, and the rest of team red, are allowed to do their own separate things and fulfill their own personal goals.
Carmen’s personal goal wasn’t to find comfort in her found family, or to deal with the trauma she had from growing up in V.I.L.E., it was to find her own history, how she ended up in V.I.L.E., where her mother was, what happened to her father, and having her dolls she had as a kid as her only link to her past for practically the whole show. The season four finale fulfilled her goal, it made her whole arc wrap up.
