Friends in the Corbin KY Tri-County area, today is the last day of #csaweek and there is something exciting for those of you that live in Barbourville that may want to support @oldhomeplacefarm as a shareholder in the 2021 CSA. The farm added a pick up location in Barbourville at the The Ugly Mug Coffee House at 103 Knox Street, Barbourville, KY 40906. Should you choose to join the CSA Orders will be dropped off at The Ugly Mug Coffee House at 1:00pm on Tuesdays. Your order will be placed on a table inside the coffee house, labeled with your name. You must pick up your order by closing time (6:00pm) on Tuesday. I wanted to share one last peek at SOME the marvelous goodness I was blessed with last Summer ad Fall. I am so excited about this coming season. With that said, pray for Maggie and Will as well as all our area farmers as they all face the flooding of their fields this weekend and more this coming week with more rain. So... Today is the FINAL DAY of National CSA Week and the final day receive a free dozen eggs when you sign up for a CSA. I love this farm because they have made my culinary life an adventure with all the new veggie we got to enjoy last year! I have shared some photos of the flowers, cheese, fruit and veggies we were blessed with over the last two seasons (I did both the Summer share and the Fall share for 2020). SO what did I do with all that goodness? Here are some of the photos of dishes I made. I used the roasted tomatoes to make wonderful spaghetti sauce and the pesto was made using the basil from my shares. Just think! You could be having these adventures in cooking too! The variety and quality of vegetables and fruits like I talked about yesterday is a big one for me. The biggest one though is I wanted to be part of the farm community somehow. I am not a farmer. I don’t have the skills or the patience to be a farmer. They deserve TONS of respect and small local farmers don’t get enough of it. The government favors large farms and by purchasing a share at the beginning of the season we are helping equip a small farm to do what they do best: feed our community and be good stewards of the land. Did you know that this week I am celebrating National CSA Sign-up Week on Feb 21-28th. Why would someone want to join in a CSA? One of my reasons is the fact that you receive vibrant, just-harvested produce. If you’re a part of a CSA, say goodbye to wilted greens and tasteless tomatoes. Your produce will be harvested when it’s ripe and, in most cases, find its way into your kitchen within a day of being picked. This means better flavor and more nutrient-rich produce. Access to heirlooms and more unusual produce varieties, and the fun that comes with trying new things! I loved being exposed to new types of greens, tomatoes and radishes this last year. I don't remember the name of this green tomato pictured below, but it is my new favorite. It is firm, juicy and not too sweet. I also learned about watermelon radishes which I had never heard of before.' they are so tasty in salads AND roasted! Old Homeplace Farm is celebrating National CSA Sign-up Week on Feb 21-28th. I joined Old Homeplace Farm CSA last year and have already joined for the 2021 season. What does CSA mean? If you’re unfamiliar with what a CSA is, it stands for “Community Supported Agriculture.” A CSA is a farm in which individuals purchase a “crop share” during the winter and early spring, before the season begins. Then, throughout the growing season, share members either come to the farm weekly to pick up their already-paid-for shares of just-harvested vegetables, or they pick up their shares at a pre-determined location. Shareholders financially support the farmer in advance to grow fresh vegetables for them in the upcoming growing season. @oldhomeplacefarm arranges pick ups for their shareholders and they also offer delivery.
