a trope I feel isn't used very often; whumpee is already in the hospital, but their friend is still incredibly protective of them. I just watched CSI 7x04 Fannysmackin, and the whumpee, Greg, a CSI, was beat up badly, and was already in the hospital. His coworker Nick was processing the scene of Greg's attack, when someone started saying that "that cop" had gotten what he deserved. Nick got upset and started talking with the guy, got confrontational, and ended up punching the guy. it was just so good. and he was one of the few visibly affected by what had happened to Greg.
YES YES YES YES YES!!!!!! Oh my god I adore that trope so much and you're right it's totally under utilized. I don't watch CSI but I think I'm gonna have to seek out that scene because it sounds lovely. I'm such a big fan of when the whumpee is in the hospital but danger still lurks and their friend is uber protective and will go feral to keep them safe. So good. Also a fan of a protective friend standing up for the whumpee like that.
