World Book Night 2014 Celebrated at Chicago State University
Chicago State University (CSU) celebrated its second year of participating in the annual World Book Night. Library staff and volunteers set up stations around campus, including the library and cafeteria, to distribute free copies of one of this year's World Book Night book selections to the CSU campus community. Volunteers even hosted a station near a local Walgreens to pass out free paperbacks and to promote the love of reading in the community.
One CSU student expressed that she felt "gratefulness for being encouraged to read more often".
"World Book Night is an annual celebration dedicated to spreading the love of reading, person to person. Each year on April 23, tens of thousands of people go out into their communities and give half a million free World Book Night paperbacks to light and non-readers." Black Studies Speaker Series Launched in February 2014
In February, Library Instruction Services (LIS) launched the first LIS speaker series with a 2014 theme: Black Studies: Past, Present and Future. A panel of distinguished scholars assembled to discuss the State of Black Studies in Higher Education.
(Pictured left to right: Faheem Abdur-Rasheed, CSU Alumnus; Alexis Mayfield, CSU Graduate Student; Dr. Zoe Franklin, Professor at Olive-Harvey College; Armstead Allen, Retired Professor at Olive-Harvey College; and Moderator Kim Dulaney, Professor at Chicago State University).
“The CSU Archives and Special Collections is pleased to co-sponsor the Black Studies Speaker Series at CSU because it highlights the importance of this interdisciplinary field of study,” said University Archivist Aaisha Haykal. “The lecture series will bring local and national scholars to speak about the various issues that are being debated and researched that have an impact on our daily lives, whether we acknowledge it or not. Furthermore, the series aims to engage CSU students and faculty, as well as the general public, with topics that may be unfamiliar to them as well as challenge their thinking about various issues. I think that the role of Black Studies in society is to challenge the status quo by encouraging independent thinking as well as foster historical understanding that will result in deeper understanding of one's self in the world.”
We are changing!!! Stay tune for a new Library and Instruction Services Website. Beta Version and Usability Testing April 2014.
