I was expecting an episode about an elderly woman stuck in her house and needing support.

What I got was a story about a woman who fought for the rights of women and helped her country during war. A woman who deserved dignity a woman who was scared and brave and knew what it was like to be forced against your will to do something. A woman who walked out of her house with pride wearing her suffragette colours and left thoughtful gifts in her will to those who meant something to her.

I know we all relate to different characters in call the midwife but let’s face it....

With her adoration for TV and her variety of emotions when reacting to events on TV....

That was so well written and so well acted by Jennifer Kirby and Ann Mitchell. 

Val’s reaction and her argument with her beloved Nan were heartbreakingly perfect. Because the tricky thing is - Elsie isn’t a villain, we and Val know that she didn’t intend to hurt anyone, she thought she was doing something helpful. Val clearly supports helping mother’s who are stuck and have an unwanted pregnancy. Val and her Nan have both expressed growing up seeing women stuck in awful situations, and families trapped by poverty and lack of options. But Val also knows that what her Nan is doing and the way her Nan is doing it is misguided and dangerous and killing people. As a granddaughter Val is shocked and  heartbroken and as a nurse Val is disgusted and horrified. She knows that her Nan doesn’t have enough understanding of what she’s doing or even have safe equipment and environments and so is butchering women, but the fact her Nan can’t see that astounds Val. The pain and disappointment in Val’s realisation of what her Nan was doing was palpable.

If you'd have asked me at the start of the series which of the two new nuns would be helping a terminally ill girl make a dress so she can go to a dance, and which would be traipsing around London to track down a woman who could give key evidence in an abortion trial..... I think I would have guessed the wrong way round!

Very glad sister Hilda is bonding with patients more and so proud of Sister Frances for wanting to do something to help in such tricky situation,seeking advice and doing it. She's come out of her shell so much
