I couldn't get through Plageuis either, I've tried three times but without comedy or a likable lead there just wasn't anything for me there. I can't comment on the objective quality of Tarkin since I've been in love with Cushing's cheekbones since I first saw him in a terrible B movie so I'm blinded my fangirlishness and the entire novel was just a joyride. I will say the antagonists of Tarkin include a few women, but... uh.. well, it is Tarkin's book.
Ha, well. I love Peter Cushing - he was my favourite Doctor (as in Doctor Who) when I was growing up, though his two films aren’t counted among the 12 canon incarnations. Alas. But Tarkin I just...am not interested in him. I like him as a villain and as he intersects in other stories - I am one of the people who loved his role in Rogue One. As the star of his own novel, it’s just not for me! Therein lies the fun about Star Wars, though: there’s something specifically for everyone.

One thing I will say about Tarkin, if you don't mind me butting in like this, is that it strongly implied female Imperial officers were unremarkable, not exceptions. There were several mentioned explicitly, and Tarkin began staff briefings by casually saying "Ladies and gentlemen".
This is good, though still not quite enough for me to have an interest in reading the book! There seems to be conflicting messages in the new canon, with the novels and comics supporting a more gender-diverse Empire with women being common across the ranks, but the film and Rebels do... not support this. At all, with the exception of the new captain in Ghosts of Geonosis. It’s frustrating.
