Hiking the Mattabesett: Part 1
Today we started our adventure of doing a thru-hike of the 62 mile Mattabesett Trail. Adventurers include: Jes, Jean, Claire, Dana, Bryan, Doggo and Arrow.
The trail starts at River Road in Middletown (directly across from NRG) and ends at Brooks Road (Asylum Resevoir 2). It is said to be a 4.8 mile hike, but I clocked 5.2. It took us just over 3 hours to complete. (We make quick stops for photos and to take in the nature.)
The blue blazes are easy to follow. I got confused twice, the blazes were painted on rocks that were a little steep (we also had ice) so I was a little intimidated, but sure enough, you do need to go down the rocks.
Oh yes, and we have renamed this section to Sparkle Trail because of all the shimmering rocks. ✨
Things we appreciated about this trail:
All the quartz, waterfalls, awesome moss, lovely laurel, variety of terrain, cool cave, many streams and some with bridges, old foundation and well.
