Culpeper County Courthouse
The current building of the Culpeper County Courthouse was built in 1870, so it is not the same building at which the Civil War "Battle of Culpeper Courthouse" was fought. Many of the counties in this area lost their records at that time, and some of the records of Culpeper County were in fact used by Union soldiers as campfire kindling, but the county clerk smuggled most of them out of town on a wagon in the middle of the night and hid them until the end of the war.

The town of Culpeper was founded in 1759 as the seat of Culpeper County. It is named for "the 2nd Baron Colepeper", who was a colonial governor of Virginia in the 1600s. The town was originally surveyed by a 27-year-old George Washington. The town is very proud of the fact that the first company of "Minutemen" in Virginia were formed here during the Revolutionary War. The town later changed hands several times during the Civil War and served as the encampment of the Union Army during the winter of 1863-64.
