Cedar Breaks National Monument
We took a long 4th of July roadtrip to go hiking at Cedar Breaks National Monument in Southern Utah. Cedar Breaks is a "natural amphitheater" caused by uplift and erosion of the rocks here over millions of years. The distinct colors were originally different layers of sediment at the bottom of a prehistoric lake. The rim is now over 10,000 feet above sea level, which was really the reason we visited: unlike most closer spots, it wasn't 110 degrees here, and the crowds weren't too bad considering the holiday.

Deer Creek on Mount Charleston
We had a wonderful time hiking near this creek high in the Spring Mountains north of Las Vegas. The very next day after our excursion, a large fire started in this area, burning hundreds of acres. It continues to not be fully contained, despite the strenuous efforts of firefighters. The cause of the fire has not been made public, though the forest service has commented that they believe it was caused by "human behavior."

Sunset & An Announcement
You may have noticed this project falling a few weeks behind lately. There are a few reasons for this. On a very basic level, this project has always been about exploring somewhere new every day. That is still something I deeply believe in. However, this minute, it's not only not something I'm doing myself, it's just not good advice. I hope more deeply than you can imagine that we will be back to normal, the real normal, before too long, but right now that's not the world we are all living in. However, I also don't want to just let this Project, which has been going for over over five and half years, lapse, and I want to honor everyone who has been so supportive of us in that time. Therefore, I have decided for the time being to scale the My Places Project back from one photo every day to one photo per week. I thank you all again for your support over the years and hope that someday the world will be a place for dreams like this one again.

Social Distancing at Grouchy John's
We made our first real trip "out" for coffee since this whole thing started, to our friend John's (he is surprisingly un-grouchy) coffee shop. Customers were standing apart from each other and outside seating was preferred.

Casinos here in Las Vegas reopened to much fanfare on June 4, but at least when I drove down the Strip in late afternoon it did not seem that things had picked up much.
