“Don’t die just yet, cowboy.”
Lying on his back with his hat held to his chest and heavy boots stacked atop one another, Duck looks laid to rest. When he gets time like this, away from the pressures of his current chosen life, he can often feel his mind start to drift and tangle with whatever connects him here. Duck’s eyelids twitch, then rise, boulders unveiling two depthless caves behind them, pupils eaten up. Like always, he’s been thinking; about his son, about his ranch, about his cattle, and about himself. He’s been somewhere else these last several minutes and anybody would be hard-pressed to convince him it’s simply just the drugs. “Dunno where I gone off to,” Duck sits up and replaces his hat on his straw-colored head, “but I’m here now.”
