Peep the bottom right corner. Yours truly got a photo credit in the program for the Colorado Avalanche. That’s right, the effing NHL. And here I thought getting one of my photos in the local paper was cool. Gotta give thanks to the Culver for giving me the opportunity to take that photo, I’m so grateful. #nbd #coloradoavalanche #culveracademies #cmahockey (at Culver Academies)

The Sport in Our Stars
This post is dedicated to Frank Stubblefield, Bob and Susan Koehler, Northwest Arkansas Polo Club, and the United States Polo Association.
Life has an uncanny way of delivering the unexpected. Sometimes, we look for it and we hope, and other times that thing that our soul most needs just finds its way to us by the stars. I believe we know it in a moment, when a gift like this has been delivered to us – a moment when we can see the past, the present, and the future converge, and we just know that this particular thing is destined to become a part of us in the most natural and authentic way. I had a moment like this two years ago, standing on a field in Gravette, Arkansas. What led me to that place, in January 2013, was a series of moments, places, and people put on my path by good fortune. What I saw on that field that day was simply a young teenage boy on a horse. Though, what I knew in that moment was that a momentous opportunity had been given to that boy to bring him there, and I was certain it was time to catch that star and hold on tight.
I had only seen my son on a horse a handful of times before he took that first polo lesson at Koehler Farm. I had seen him bravely ride several trail horses at age six, and I had seen him ride the largest black horse I’d ever seen, during his first semester of high school at Culver Military Academy, just a few months prior. I had not realized, until standing there on Koehler’s field, how horses completed his soul. And in that moment too, with polo mallet in his hand, eyes and mind set on his new teacher, I saw just how this particular brand of horsemanship would also be a perfect match to develop his mind, body, and spirit. It was literally a match made in heaven.
Since that moment, Koehler Farm has become a second home to my son. He has learned the value of hard work, humility, sportsmanship, patience, and grace – lessons that may have come from the barn and the playing field, but which are applicable to every aspect of his life. I continue to watch the world open up to him, as he continues to commit to this sport and to the people who nurture him in it. Day-by-day, as he rides and trains, I watch him gain the confidence and resilience it takes to be the good man he wants to be.
This summer will be my son’s third at Koehler Farm. Many, many thanks to owners Bob and Susan Koehler, and to the Northwest Arkansas Polo Club, he will continue to participate in work-to-ride, making it possible for him to learn every aspect of maintaining and training polo ponies, participating in lessons and clinics with USPA coaches, and playing on the Great Plains Circuit. Between Koehler Farm and Culver Academies, where he also gets to play and train, our son is living a dream come true. We are holding onto that star, and with the help of many good people, we are keeping it burning bright. We are keeping down the path, always watching for those small moments that remind us to take big leaps of faith.
