Was it so hard to die, Achilles?

I got bored and decided to make a costume set for Wildberry and Pavlova that’s based on Achilles and a mixture of Aphrodite, Apollo, and Paris. Still cooking on the digital coloring

Wildberry’s costume is easy to tell that he’s based upon Achilles but rather than the Achilles heel being what was his undoing, it’s his heart. The one that pavlova had found amusing because of his foolish love. In this, one could argue that Achilles only decided to finally fight because of the death of Patroclus, and to that I says, yep!

In this, Crunchy Chip would act as Patroclus, having been killed by Pavlova with a stray arrow causing pain to Wildberry.

Pavlova’s outfit is based upon Bleeding Heart Flowers because of obvious reasons. He’s loosely based upon Aphrodite for the aspect of being fond of romance’s (and being the cause for the Trojan war that caused the death of Patroclus, and later Achilles). He’s based upon Apollo, who aided Hector in killing Patroclus in the Iliad, along with guided the arrow that was shot by Paris into Achilles’s heel. He’s also based upon Paris himself, the one who shot the arrow that ended Achilles.

In this, Pavlova merely shot the arrow which broke Wildberry’s heart. I know I put an arrow in his chest, it’s a symbol of his broken heart.

I have several reasons behind these specific choices, along with some details that felt right to add.

Bleeding Heart flowers represent a deep and passionate love between two people, and a connection that goes beyond life and death. It felt right to base Pavlova on this flower because of it’s name (and his costume representing the heartbreak he brings) but also the story of Achilles and Patroclus within the Iliad (and even the book The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller). Where Achilles has Patroclus take his place on the battlefield within his armor only for Patroclus to be killed by Hector, leading Achilles to go on bloody rampage to bring justice.

The choice of Wildberry to be Achilles was easy, the hard part was trying to figure out a design for him. I went through a few designs for the armor before deciding upon the one I chose. Originally, I wasn’t going to add the helmet but his head looked bare without it.

Apollo was on the side of the Trojan’s, aiding their efforts and being the one to weaken and remove the armor from Patroclus so Hector could deal the finishing hit. Although, the story in which I picture leading up to Crunchy Chip’s death is different from what occurred in the Iliad for Patroclus, he still ends up dead due to the intervention of Pavlova.

Hollyberry’s awakened design partially inspired this whole concept because she’s based upon not only Valkyrie in Norse Mythology but also Athena. The “Aegis” is a divine shield that was associated with Zeus and Athena and acting as the symbol of protection. Through this, it came easy to choose Achilles because be had to work alongside Achilles and Diomedes (two warriors that Athena favored.)

Pavlova is based upon both Eros in Greek Mythology and Cupid in Roman Mythology. Cupid had different kids of arrows in which had different purposes, one of those arrows was an iron/lead-tipped arrow that could cause unhealable heartbreak. I took inspiration from that and made the arrow in which Pavlova holds into the shape of a bleeding heart flower with the same purpose: to cause heartbreak.

Bonus: I keep listening to the song Achilles by The Divine Comedy. It’s pretty great

I’m still thinking about what I could name the costumes and the art as a whole so if you have any ideas please do tell me :D
