Curate NYC at Brooklyn's Like the Spice Gallery tonight

Discover work by top NYC emerging artists at the opening of Curate NYC at Like the Spice Gallery tonight in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

In an effort to promote New York City’s emerging visual artist community, NYCEDC and Full Spectrum Experience, Inc. ran the second annual Curate NYC competition, which selects a number of New York City emerging visual artists to display their artwork at galleries across the five boroughs. In addition to these venues, works will be shown online at CurateNYC.org.

Below are details for tonight's showing at Like the Spice Gallery. Stop by, and support New York City's thriving art sector!

When: December 8, 2011 6-9 p.m.

What: A group show of selected Curate NYC artworks.

WNYC's Brian Lehrer spoke with Full Spectrum's Brian Tate and Danny Simmons who, along with NYCEDC, bring you the second annual art competition for emerging artists in the City, Curate NYC:

Brian Lehrer: This is not a winner-take-all competition. You had 150 winners last year chosen from about 1200 entries so your odds are a little better than, say, the New York State lottery.

Danny Simmons: [Laughs] Listen, this year, there's going to be a lot more winners. I mean, there'll still be 150 postcards, but it's also juried by the galleries, so we have those five galleries juried. We have 10 other galleries doing online shows, and we have six museum curators doing shows also. So a lot of people get their art seen by curators and the public instead of just 150 people.

NYC-based emerging artists, submit your work to our second annual Curate NYC art competition by tomorrow, October 27, for curatorial review by:

Kevin Stayton, Chief Curator, The Brooklyn Museum (above)

Laurie Ann Farrell, Executive Director of Exhibitions, SCAD

Curate NYC exists to heighten exposure for New York City visual artists, and to promote the city’s image as a cultural hub. In 2011, guest curators will organize online shows, and five galleries, one per borough, will curate and exhibit their own shows of actual works by Curate NYC artists.

The final deadline is November 8, 2011. Good luck!
