Mina and Eko attend a private junior high, Keisetsu-Gakkou, in Nichibotsu City. This school is connected to its senior high school by a bridge across a river. Most of the students attending are part of upper or upper-middle class families, but students can get into the school on scholarship.

Mina’s parents are upper-middle class and pay the tuition for Mina and her older brother, Mitsuru, to attend the junior and senior high, but are often out on business trips for their jobs. Mina does well in academics but doesn’t care for much of anything, except where she finds solace in the art hall.

Eko attends Keisetsu-Gakkou on scholarship money, so she works very hard to keep her grades up. She tends to be considered standoffish and strange to her classmates. She’s been trying to establish an astronomy club, but nobody seems interested.

Izumi Yamasaki is a new student to school! She tends to stutter and forget her traditional manners when speaking, but she’s overall very well-meaning, if not a bit shy. Her sister attends the senior high next door.

Hina is a Mina’s childhood bestie!! She’s a bundle of sunshine who enjoys gardening and light novels. She’s overall very confused on why Mina is all of a sudden buddy-buddy with Eko when they butt heads every day, but likes to roll with the punches.

Students can wear either knee-high white socks or dark tights with their uniforms.

why are they like this

mina loves to draw her friends. it’s their way of saying hi, you’re here, i see you. of course, people who have been friends with them for years are already used to this.

hina is handed a loose-leaf sheet of paper between classes — “god, math is so boring” — with little sketches of her own face. ayame gets bombarded with screenshots of a familiar sketchbook, the colors on the pages matching the bright red of her hair. even mitsuru, as annoying of a brother as he is, often gets met with a scribbled doodle and a note on the kitchen fridge.

eventually, this extends to her Precure friends as well. izumi is gifted a canvas on her birthday, on it a beautifully hand-painted version of herself with stars in her eyes. sayuri and akane are stopped at the end of the day, graced with a almost absurdly cartoonish drawing. sayuri ends up shoving it back in their face, but it gets a nice laugh all the way around.

eko finds a sheet of paper in her locker. it flutters out unceremoniously as she deposits her books for the day. on it, a picture of herself, done in charcoal with a careful hand —- unassuming, a small smile on the face, looking down a book. a bright yellow sticky note sticks to the corner.
